Duties:  Include research, motion drafting, and the opportunity to observe mediations and hearings.

Work schedule:  The work schedule is flexible – ideally an intern would be available 10-15 hours per week during office hours which are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Compensation: The internship is unpaid, but students are eligible for pro bono service hours. May also be eligible for for externship credit through Akron Law.

Cleveland, OH – 2017 Summer Intern – City of Cleveland Law Department

AkronLawJobs No. 8243  The City of Cleveland Department of Law is seeking law students for legal clerkships for the summer of 2017. The position provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in a public sector environment that has produced a U.S. Supreme Court Justice and a federal cabinet secretary, among other distinguished alumni. Summer clerks will assist attorneys who represent the City of Cleveland in transactional work and civil and criminal litigation. Clerking for the Department of Law offers broad exposure to the legal profession in a creative, civil environment. The Department of Law’s Civil Division is divided into six sections: Development, Code Enforcement, Safety, House Counsel, Litigation, and Operations and Sustainability. The Department’s Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor crimes in Cleveland and reviews felony cases to determine whether they should be bound over to a grand jury for county prosecution. The Law Department’s summer clerkship consists of: challenging work in a broad range of practice areas; instruction in municipal law; feedback on legal research and writing; and guest speakers. Although the 2017 dates have not been finalized, the summer program generally runs from late May/early June through the first week of August. Positions are also available during the academic year in a less structured program. Summer clerks may receive academic credit from their law school, use federal work-study dollars, receive a public-interest scholarship, or seek a stipend from an organization such as a bar association. The Law Department will assist in securing any necessary approvals, but the individual law clerks are solely responsibility for making such compensation arrangements. All available legal clerkship positions in 2017 will be unpaid.

Akron Law Alumni Association seeks 2017-18 Student Director – Application Deadline: April 21, 2017

Message from Lia Evans, Director of Alumni and Development

The Akron Law Alumni Association (“LAA”) Board of Directors has a dedicated position on its Board for a student director.  This unique and valuable opportunity provides the student director a chance to become involved in alumni leadership and activities with the law school.  The student director represents Akron Law students to the LAA Board and works with the Board to identify ways in which students and alumni may work and communicate together for the benefit of both groups.

The student director serves in an ex-officio capacity and is expected to attend all Board meetings which are held at the School of Law on a bi-monthly basis throughout the academic year (i.e., August, October, December, February, and April).  The Board meetings begin at 4:30 p.m. and generally last for one and a half hours.

The student director is also expected to assist with the class gift campaign.

Applications for the 2017-18 student director to the LAA Board of Directors will be accepted from upper division law students who are in good standing.  Applications should include:

  • why he or she wants to serve on the LAA Board;
  • why the student believes that he or she should be selected for the position;
  • a copy of the student’s resume; and
  • a proposed plan for the year ahead.

The LAA Board’s executive committee will review the application materials and select students will be invited by Monday, April 23 to interview.  The interviews will take place on April 25, 2017 LAA Board meeting.  Students interested in being considered for this position should e-mail their application materials to Michele Novachek at manovac@uakron.edu by Friday, April 21, 2017.
