Socratic Karaoke – March 15, 9 pm, On Tap

SELS will be hosting its famous Socratic Karaoke on March 15!  Come show off your talent, support your classmates, and enjoy a nice stress-free evening with friends!

If you have paid your dues and would like to be an officer next year, SELS will be holding elections at 8:00pm prior the event in the party room at On Tap.

The event starts at 9:00pm and will be hosted at On Tap in Montrose at 3997 Medina Road, Akron, OH 44333.  (Just a ten minute drive from Highland Square!)

Barrister’s Ball Superlative nominations will begin on Monday, March 4

Barrister’s Ball Superlative nominations will begin on Monday. Nomination forms can be picked up in envelopes on the SBA bulletin board outside the SBA office in the student lounge, and filled forms can be placed in the wooden box outside the SBA office. We’ll be accepting nominations for only 2 weeks.

Nominate your classmates for “most likely to succeed,” “class clown,” and a variety of other categories. Be sure to attend the Ball in April to see who wins!

Re-accreditation Forum – Monday, March 4, 4 pm, Student Union Theater

The University of Akron is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. This Monday and Tuesday, HLC will visit our University  for its regular re-accreditation visit. The HLC  team will examine our performance based on five core components:

  • Mission
  • Ethical and Responsible Conduct
  • Teaching and Learning – Quality, Resources, and Support
  • Teaching and Learning – Evaluation and Improvement
  • Resources, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness

The team is interested in hearing from students.  We encourage you to read the self-study report executive summary (available at http://www.uakron.edu/hlc/) and to attend an open forum especially for students with several of the reaccreditation team members on Monday, March 4, from 4 to 4:45 pm in the Student Union Theater.

J. Andrew Fulker Scholarships

The Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Association announces it is currently receiving applications for scholarship grants from the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was established, in cooperation with the Troy Foundation, as a lasting tribute to Troy Attorney· J. Andrew Fulker who died in an auto accident in 1989.

Andy Fulker was a 1971 graduate of Troy High School. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University in 1976 and his Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law in 1979. He was admitted to the practice of law in Ohio in 1979 and became a partner in the Troy law firm of Faust, Harrelson, Fulker & McCarthy. He served as Assistant Municipal Prosecutor for the City of Troy from 1979 to 1982 and as counsel for the Miami County Planning and Zoning Boards from 1979 through 1981. He was a member of the Miami County, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations, the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys.

The scholarship fund is designed to assist deserving law students who are residents of Miami County. Recipients of J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship grants will be selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Miami County Bar Association. Grants will be used for law school tuition. To be eligible an applicant must be admitted for full time attendance at a college of law or law school in a program designed to lead to a Juris Doctor or similar law degree.

The scholarship fund operates as an endowment fund with grants awarded from the income earned on the principal of the fund. Gifts to the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund are eligible for deduction as a charitable contribution for federal income tax purposes. Contributions may be made payable to the Troy Foundation, designated for the J. Andrew Fulker Memorial Scholarship Fund, and mailed or delivered to Melissa A. Kleptz, Executive Director, Troy Foundation, 216 W. Franklin Street, Troy, Ohio 45373.

Effie Solomon Memorial Scholarship

The Beaver Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women is again offering the Effie Solomon Memorial Scholarship. The award of $1000 is open to female students who are enrolled in an accredited law school and who have completed at least one year of law school in good standing. Preference shall be given to Beaver County residents.

The application procedure is as follows:

2. Completed application form submitted by April 10, 2013
3. Three letters of reference. (at least two from law school)
4. Transcripts of grades from college and law school.
5. Interview by the Beaver Valley AAUW Scholarship Committee.
