Law Student Panelists Needed – Maplewood Career Center – November 2, 6:30 pm

Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna, OH (about 30 minutes east of Akron) seeks 4-5 law students to speak to high school students entering their Legal Academy this year. The intent of the panel is to address life as a law student, as well as your educational and professional history leading up to law school.

The panel will run from 6:30-7:30 pm on November 2.

BLSA Golf Tournament – This Saturday, Sept. 17

The BLSA Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 at Mud Run Golf Course, with a shotgun start at 9:30 am. Each player will be paired with a practicing attorney or fellow law student. The lowest combined team score will win the tournament prize. There will also be multiple individual competitions throughout the course for prizes.

The entry fee is $35 and will cover 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, food and prizes. We will also be selling hole sponsorships for $50. To register for the event or purchase a hole sponsorship, please contact KP Riley at kpthelawstudent@gmail.com.

Fed. Society Meeting – Sept. 19, 12:30 and 5:30, W-215

          Mark your calendars for this coming Monday, September 19.  The Federalist Society will hold its general fall meeting in W-215 at 12:30 pm and 5:30 pmChinese will be provided for lunch and dinner.

The Federalist Society is widely lauded as one of the most influential legal groups in America.  Benefits of Society membership include tremendous networking opportunities, free or discounted travel to national Fed. Soc. events, and a free subscription to the Harvard Journal for Law and Public Policy.  Most importantly, however, Fed. Soc. enables law students to influence the current legal dialogue.  The Federalist Society advocates few official positions, but instead focuses on fostering debate and giving voice to a wide spectrum of viewpoints.

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for Law Students

Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility

Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff.

Selection Criteria

  • Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship review board based on the following criteria:
  • Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school)
  • Commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law
  • Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)
  • Written communication skills
  • Oral communication skills determined through an interview of the law student
  • Leadership qualities and community involvement

Financial Award

Recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship will receive $5,000 payable for the Fall semester oftheir second or third year of law school.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted September 5, 2011 through January 5, 2012. Awards will be announced in April 2012.

Applicants will submit the following documents for consideration:

  • Completed Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship application form
  • Resume
  • Academic transcripts (law school, undergraduate/graduate school)
  • Writing sample (5-10 pages) (a legal writing sample is requested, if available)
  • Contact information for three references
  • One page statement describing how diversity has impacted the candidate
