SBA – Public Interest Fellowship Auction, Jan. 22, 5:30, Student Union

Once again it is time to prepare for the Annual Public Interest Fellowship Auction.  This year’s auction will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm in the University of Akron’s Student Union.  Mark your calendars! The auction is a fun event sponsored by the Student Bar Association to raise money for the Public Interest Fellowship Scholarship Fund.  Our goal is to raise funds for students to receive small stipends to work in non-profit or public settings where they would not normally be paid.

If you are interested in making a donation, would like to participate in any way, please contact me or any other member of the Student Bar Association Executive Board.  Any donation or help in preparing the event would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your generosity and support—we could not do this without you!

Repost: Oct. 22 – National Pro Bono Week Fundraiser

On Friday, October 22, 2010 as part of National Pro Bono week, the School of Law will sponsor a fundraising event here at the Law School. The money raised will go to  Community Legal Aid. As you know, that organization services a multi-county area in Northeast Ohio, representing civil litigants who otherwise would not have access to counsel.

We will offer hamburgers and hotdogs beginning at 5 p.m. outside the School in the grassy and paved areas outside West Hall or in the lobby in the event of inclement weather. Cost will be $4.00 per plate.  We will also have a cornhole tournament pitting student teams against faculty teams at a cost of $5.00 per person. The winners will receive tokens of appreciation. Finally, there will be an inflatable game( a jousting pit) where students may attempt to best selected faculty members. Cost for that will be $5.00 per student per try.

We already have numerous members of the faculty, staff, and administration signed up to cook, play cornhole and/or joust with you. The faculty members are confident that they will prevail in both the jousting  and the cornhole tournament.

This is a worthy cause and will be promoted nationwide and locally.

Courtroom Conduct and Attire Event – Friday, Nov. 12, Portage Country Club

Mark your calendars for a fantastic event at the Portage Country Club!

On Friday, November 12 at Portage Country Club, the Women in Law Section of the Akron Bar Association is hosting a CLE discussing conduct and attire in the courtroom, along with some of the reported decisions that address this same issue.  Judges Rowlands, McCarty, and Cosgrove will be our panelists, and the program has been approved for 1.0 hour of Professionalism credit.  The CLE starts at 5:00 p.m.

Immediately after the CLE, we’ll be having our “Law Suits Fashion Show.”  We’ll be serving heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, while we enjoy a fashion show featuring both men and women’s clothing.  Judges from our local courts will be modeling, while Judge Tom McCarty will be our emcee.

The cost of the event is:

$42 for CLE and fashion show
$27 for fashion show and cocktails only

We will also be collecting donations of gently-used professional clothing that will be contributed to the students of the Akron Law and Leadership Institute.  These suits will allow some students (who might not otherwise have access to such specialty clothing) to participate in the program with confidence.

Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Caryn L. Peterson, Chair of the Women in Law Section

Cinderella Story

Once again the faculty and progeny/spouses defeated the upstart first year students in an athletic contest. In what we hope will be an annual kickball event, the faculty team was victorious by a margin of 4-3. The team name for the first years was Vodka and Red Bull, which may account for their performance. This was a well planned event, organized by the SBA. The faculty especially appreciated the sportsmanship of the students who played with honor and style although without much ability!

There were some vague but consistent complaints about illegal acts by the faculty first baseman. As the faculty member with the most seniority, Professor Carro considered those whining complaints and rejected them.

Events like these are fun and valuable to the law school community. We hope that this can become a tradition and that in the future the students will be able to prevail (not) .

Fed. Society/ACLU – Enemy Combatants Debate – Nov. 12, 12:05 pm, L-151

Join the Federalist Society and ACLU on November 12 at 12:05 in room L-151 for an exciting debate on whether the United State’s policy toward enemy combatants is legal. The debate will feature Lieutenant Colonel David R. Frakt, U.S. Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_J._R._Frakt), and Major Kyndra Rotunda, U.S. Army (http://www.kyndrarotunda.com/). Both speakers are current military JAG officers who have extensive legal experience in the War on Terror. LTC Frakt and Major Rotunda have both testified before Congress on the treatment of enemy combatants, and are known for their outspoken views. 1 hour of CLE credit will be available for those who attend. Food will be provided!
