BLSA–First Meeting Tuesday, January 31, 5:15 p.m.

BLSA’s (Black Law Students Association) first general body meeting of the semester is TUESDAY, January 31st at 5:15 PM in Law 141. I encourage everyone to attend because we will be planning for upcoming events this semester and most importantly we will be talking about JOBS! 

Refreshments will be provided for this meeting. 

Please let me know if you have anything you would like to add to the agenda prior to the meeting.

American IP Law Education Foundation Opportunities

The American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation has the following opportunities for law students:

Sidney B. Williams, Jr. IP Law Scholarship The Foundation awards scholarships to law students from groups who are presently underrepresented among IP attorneys. Recipients have the opportunity to receive $10,000 per year for three years. 22 scholarships were awarded this year. The deadline to apply is March 17, 2017 and you can apply at www.aiplef.org.

2017 Robert C. Watson Competition: Law students are encouraged to submit an article on an IP topic written on or before June 30, 2017. Judges will consider the merit of the article as a contribution to the knowledge respecting IP and the extent to which it displays original and creative thought. The winner will receive reasonable reimbursement to attend the AIPLA Annual Meeting (October 19-21, 2017) and a $2,000 award. Submissions should be 30-40 pages typed. Int’l Assoc. of Defense Counsel Legal-Writing Contest

The International Association of Defense Counsel announces its 2017 Legal-Writing Contest. Entries must cover the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence, or other areas of practical concern to lawyers who defend civil litigation.  The suggested word limit is 12,000 words, including footnotes.

Monetary prizes are $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Winning and honorable-mention entries will be considered for publication in the IADC’s quarterly Defense Counsel Journal. Entries (along with the entry form) are due Friday, May 19, 2017 via e-mail to Melisa Maisel Vanis at mmaisel@iadclaw.org.

Mendrzycki Essay Contest

The ABA’s Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability is accepting essays in the 2017 Ed Mendrzycki Essay Contest. The topic addresses ethical concerns arising under the Model Rules of Professional Conduct where a law firm wishes to associate with litigation-funding companies, including undertaking representation of one such company while also recommending the company’s services to the firm’s clients.

The winner receives a $5,000 cash prize and an all-expense-paid trip to Boston in April 2017 to attend the Committee’s National Legal Malpractice Conference. Essays must be e-mailed or postmarked by March 3, 2017. Students must be members of the ABA to participate (you can enroll for basic membership for free on the ABA’s website).
