AkronLawJobs Job No. 3165 – 1L Students – To ensure that the next generation of public sector leaders is empowered to shape the future of Northeast Ohio, the Bedford Municipal Court has established the Legal Fellowship Program to expose future public servants to the inner-workings of the court system. The Bedford Municipal Court Fellowship attracts entrepreneurial, highly motivated college and law students and gives them a broad overview of the court. Throughout the course of the summer, Fellows who have at least an 80% attendance record will receive a $750 stipend. It is asked that a Fellow report to the Court two days per week and is present at various community outreach programs approximately 5 weekends over the summer.

 Objectives:  Empower the next generation of Northeast Ohio public servants. Facilitate a practical and hands on education in the workings of the court. Inspire effective and ethical legal leadership for Northeast Ohio. Integrate hands on experience with theoretical understanding of the complex challenges facing the court system

 Nature of Program:  The Bedford Municipal Court Fellowship offers learning opportunities to students interested in pursuing careers in public service. The program provides an in-depth view of how the court operates. Through this interactive program Fellows will have the opportunity to: Work with the Court’s Judges and senior staff;  Work with the Clerks, Bailiffs and Probation Department;  Engage in the Court’s Community Outreach Program; Develop new ideas for policies and initiatives Eligibility The Bedford Municipal Court encourages students from all disciplines to apply with an emphasis on law students completing their 1st year of law school. The program seeks to attract candidates who are passionate about public service and have demonstrated a substantial commitment to achieving excellence through their scholarship, leadership ability, and extracurricular involvement. You must be a currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate, or law student to apply.

 Selection Process:   The selection process will consist of two stages. During the first stage, completed applications are screened by the fellowship selection committee. The selection committee includes staff as well as at least one of the Judges. Among the qualities looked for in future fellows are scholastic achievement, oral and written communication skills, analytic skills, campus and community service involvement, political awareness, and leadership potential.

The cover letter should include any achievements or skills that will help you in your fellowship. All offers are made with the understanding that prospective Fellows pass a criminal background investigation prior to being selected, agree to sign a confidentiality agreement and agree to Fellowship guidelines.
