Student Board Association Nominations are open!

Nominations for the 2020-2021 SBA Board are open. As a student at Akron Law, you are automatically a member of SBA. As such, you can nominate individuals to the executive board and for class representatives. The executive board is composed of the president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. To be eligible to run for an executive board position you MUST have completed two full semesters of law school prior to the time you will take office (not including the summer semester). Further, each student can nominate up to 4 class representatives (2L, 3L, part-time).

Any individual who would like to be nominated for an executive board or class representative position on SBA must get at least two nominations (you are able to nominate yourself). Nominations will open on Monday, April 13 and will close on Thursday, April 16 at 6 p.m. You may only nominate representatives from your representative class, but all classes are able to nominate qualified individuals for the executive board positions. Spring Start Students: you are not able to nominate class representatives at this time, as your class election will be next spring, but you are able to nominate and vote for executive positions.

IPTLA Virtual Guest Speaker Wednesday, April 15th, 12:15
The Role of Intellectual Property in Life Sciences Innovation and a Global Health Crisis
Jon P. Santamauro, Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie

In recent days, there have been calls in many countries, including the U.S., to disregard patents on treatments, vaccines, and medical devices needed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Jon Santamauro, a Senior Director for International Government Affairs at AbbVie, a leading innovative pharmaceutical company, will discuss the role of IP inpharmaceutical innovation to develop treatments that give us a fighting chance to beat this pandemic and the next. He will also talk about efforts to make treatments widely available during the current crisis. Mr. Santamauro is kind enough to be appearing and speaking on his own behalf to enrich our students’ learning experience, and any views he expresses will be his own and do not represent the views of AbbVie. His schedule is subject to change due to the fast-moving nature of events.

Prior to joining AbbVie, Mr. Santamauro had a long career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including service as the Intellectual Property Attaché in the U.S. Mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. During this time, he represented the United States at the WTO, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN organizations in matters relating to intellectual property. Dungeons and Dragons for Akron Law – Stay Connected!

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join in a game of Dungeons and Dragons to ward off boredom and stay connected during the quarantine. The game sessions will be hosted by Raph Petrig using free services on Discord and www.roll20.net

All levels of experience are welcome and support will be given to help new players learn the ropes. The game will follow rules from Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition with PDFs of the Player’s Handbook available courtesy Raph. If anyone is interested in learning to be a Dungeon Master or has experience being one and is willing to participate options to do so can be provided.

Games will initially be held Friday evenings but can be rescheduled to accommodate busy schedules. For more information or to sign up, contact Raph at asp72@zips.uakron.edu. We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy during this quarantine!”

I intended to use “Lawyers and Dragons” to refer to the game sessions. There are absolutely no costs to play and the only equipment required is a laptop and stable internet connection. Headsets with working microphones are recommended.

I’m so excited to share this game with the rest of my classmates and colleagues and can’t wait to get started!

Respectfully,

Amber “Raph” Petrig

Fink Family Scholarship for a Pharmacist in Law School

Fink Family Scholarship
For a Pharmacist in Law School The American Society for Pharmacy Law (“ASPL”) is seeking applicants for the 2020 Fink Family Scholarship.  The purpose of the Scholarship is to support a pharmacist who: (1) is attending law school; (2) demonstrates academic, professional, or service-related achievement; and (3) is most likely to use a law degree to further such achievement and to contribute to the benefit of society.

The $5,000 scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable award and will be administered by ASPL.  The scholarship award will be payable to the institution where the student is enrolled.  The recipient will also receive a one year complimentary student membership in ASPL.

The Fink Family Scholarship was established by Joseph L. Fink III and his family in 2014.

Eligibility
The applicant must be a graduate of an ACPE-accredited entry level pharmacy degree program in the U.S. and licensed as a pharmacist in a U.S. jurisdiction. The applicant must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school to pursue the JD degree. The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent U.S. Resident who successfully completed the first year and the first semester of the second year of law school. If chosen as a recipient of the Scholarship, the individual must be enrolled in the third year of law school as a condition for the funds to be paid to the law school.
Selection Criteria
The selection process includes review of: Academic transcripts from pharmacy and law school. LSAT scores. A legal writing sample of the applicant’s choice. Letter of reference from a law school professor. A brief essay (maximum two, double-spaced pages) describing how the applicant intends to apply the dual background and preparation being pursued. ASPL may require additional information as part of the application process as it deems necessary to select a recipient who best meets the purposes of the Scholarship. Preference is given to students who have made the commitment to full-time study by being enrolled on a full-time basis in a “day” program requiring three years for completion of the degree. Those in “evening” programs requiring four years for completion may apply but will not enjoy the same preference. Financial need is not a criterion.

Deadline for submission of an application is May 31, 2020. The recipient of the Scholarship will be notified no later than July 15, 2020. All required information is to be submitted to:
