To all students sitting for the July 2013 Ohio Bar Examination:

As you may be aware, as a courtesy, Akron Law has reserved a block of hotel rooms at a discounted rate in Columbus. The deadline to reserve a room is Friday, July 5, 2013.  FYI…Akron Law will have a representative staying at the same hotel, as well as goodies, pencils, pens, and snacks, courtesy of your soon-to-be fellow alum.

There is a pool, an exercise room, a diner-type restaurant, a small lounge, and free Internet access.  There is also a shuttle service available, and the bar exam is being administered about a mile away, so students can walk if they like.

BLSA Annual Banquet

Come celebrate the banner year of the National Black Law Student Association’s Small Chapter of the year: Akron BLSA! 

Akron BLSA invites you to join us for Akron BLSA’s Annual Banquet, which will be held April 13, 2013, at 6:30PM at the Quaker Square Inn. We are honored to have Judge Carla Moore, Presiding Judge of the Ohio Ninth District Court of Appeals, deliver our keynote address.  Please join us for an evening of music, hors d’ouevres, a three-course meal, and the company of some of the best legal minds in Northeast Ohio. 

This event marks the culmination of an exceptional year for Akron BLSA. Not only did the chapter win the Midwest BLSA Small Chapter of the Year, but we have been named the National Small Chapter of the Year as well! In addition, the Akron BLSA Moot Court Team won second-runners up in the Midwest and made a national appearance! 

We are very excited to celebrate our membership and supporters with our pinnacle event for the 2012-2013 academic year. Tickets for Professionals are $50, $35 for Students.  Tickets will go on sale April 1st, 2013.

TO:  May 2013 JD Degree Candidates Preparing to Take the July 2013 Ohio Bar Examination

 The following certificate forms for the Ohio Bar Examination have approaching deadlines.  These forms must be certified by the law school, then submitted to the Court so that eligibility to sit for the Ohio Bar Examination may be established. Please check these upcoming deadlines and be sure to submit your forms in time to allow for processing.  These forms must be submitted to College Program Specialist Terri Bisesi in The Office of Law Student Services, Dean’s Office, Room 136 of the law building.

  1. Law School Character Certificate:  You may drop off the Law School Character Certificate at the law school receptionist.  Ms. Bisesi will prepare the certificate for Dean Thorpe’s signature. The certificate form will be returned to you so that you may include it in your application packet to the Court.  The deadline to be received (not postmarked) at the Court as per their website:
  2. Final Law School Certificate:  You may drop off the Final Law School Certificate any time prior to the end of spring semester.  Ms. Bisesi will hold it until graduation on Sunday, May 19, 2013, then send it directly to the Supreme Court of Ohio on Monday, May 20.
  3. Substance Abuse Instruction CertificateYou do not need to submit this form to us for completion.  Substance abuse lectures are available two times a year as a school offering from Akron Law.  Therefore, if you attended one of the lectures, we include the completion of this one hour of substance instruction on your Final Law School Certificate.  If you have not attended one of the law school’s Substance Abuse Lectures, make-up lectures are not available through The University of Akron School of Law. Lectures are scheduled through Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) for a fee. Contact their office at 1-800-282-6556.

Tuesday, March 12- CIPLA meeting in Cleveland at the Ritz.  Bernard Knight, General Counsel for the USPTO will be be giving a presentation about “Formulating USPTO Positions for Supreme Court Cases.”  This is the LAST CIPLA meeting of the year! Please register by Monday, March 11.

Friday, March 15- Octavio Saldaña-Villanueva from Baker & McKenzie in Mexico City will be giving a free CLE presentation on the differences between IP law in the U.S. and Latin America.  The presentation is from 11 am to 1 pm in W-214 and food will be provided.
