West Online Study Aids

We are in the process of renewing our contract for the West Online Study Aids.  This process is taking longer than we expected and we might experience an interruption in our access to these materials while this matter is resolved.  Our access could be suspended on September 30.  We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.  The print versions of the West Study Aids are available in the ASP Office, Law 315.

Here are instructions on how to save your notes and markups from the West Online Study Aids
You can either export your notes and markups or print the pages with your annotations.  Exporting is the best option.

To Export:

  1. Open the study aid that you annotated.
  2. In the Tools Set menu on the left click the Tools tab.
  3. Under the Notes heading click EXPORT ALL NOTES.  Save to your computer.

To Print:

  1. Open the study aid that you annotated.
  2. In the Tools Set menu on the left click the Tools tab.
  3. Under the Print Tools heading click PRINT.
  4. You have two choices:
    • In the print pop-up box click the My Markup/Notes tab.  Then select All Notes.
    • In the print pop-up box click the Document tab.  Then select Current Page or enter specific pages to print.  Make sure to click Include My Markup/Notes.

NOTE:

  1. There are print limits for the West Online Study Aids.  You cannot print the entire document.  You are only permitted to print 150 pages from the West Study Aids per month.  This is why exporting your notes is the best option.
  2. Due to an incompatibility with Chrome’s version of Flash, Westlaw recommends using a different browser for printing.
  3. There does not seem to an import feature.  You cannot directly import your notes back into the study aids at a later date.

How to Brief a Case

Try this CALI lesson for some practice on briefing a case. Here is a description about the lesson:

“This is an exercise designed to introduce first-semester law students to the basic elements of a typical case “brief” and to teach them general methodology for writing their own briefs. The exercise consists of three parts: (1) an introduction to the purposes and uses of a case brief; (2) a detailed examination of each of the ten components of a typical case brief (with examples); and (3) two actual cases that students are asked to read and then to brief.”
