Black’s Law Dictionary is Back!

Black’s Law Dictionary is now available on WestlawNext for law students.  Make it easy to use Black’s Law Dictionary by adding it to your Westlaw favorites.

Here is how:

  1. Open WestlawNext and click on Secondary Sources.
  2. Black’s Law Dictionary is the first resource on the right under Tools & Resources.
  3. Click to open and then click on the gold star next to the title at the top of the page.
  4. You may have to create a group for your favorites and give the group a name.  You can even name the group “Favorites” or whatever you want.
  5. Don’t forget to click SAVE.

I created a group called Reference and added American Jurisprudence and Ohio Jurisprudence to the same group!  Now all three resources are the first titles I see when log into WestlawNext.

Stop by my office if you want to see how this is done or contact one of the Westlaw Student Associates Aaron Conrardy (aaron.conrardy5@gmail.com) or Alex Ripich (amr157@zips.uakron.edu).

Copyright Law and Scanning Casebooks

Last year the Law Library added a public photocopier which does photocopying in black and white or color.  It also does scanning which can be downloaded to a thumb drive.  Copying is 7 cents for black and white and 20 cents for color.

In using this photocopier one is required to follow the U.S. laws regarding copyright.  Generally scanning a law school casebook to a thumb drive and then distributing copies of the digital image would violate the law.  Such scanning and distribution by a law student could be grounds for a honor code violation.  If you have any questions about what is permissible to do using the Law Library’s photocopier please contact one of the librarians.

For more information about copyright policies of the University see the following link.  This web site goes into some detail about what is permissible to copy.

Law Library Reading Period and Finals Announcements

OASP and Sum & Substance- Circulation Changes

The circulation period and overdue fines for OASP and Sum and Substance materials will change for Reading Period and Finals. Starting on April 21, these materials will circulate for only 1 day (instead of 72 hours) and no renewals will be allowed.  Overdue fines for these materials will increase from $1.00 per day to $5.00 per day.

These changes provide access to the materials for a greater number of students. If you have questions regarding these changes please stop by the Circulation Desk and ask to speak with Ms. Nevins or a librarian.

Don’t forget…you have access to West Study Aids on Westlaw!  See this posting for more information.

Shhh! Law Students are Studying

It is the time of the semester when students are writing papers and preparing for exams.  Please be courteous of your fellow students and help control the noise level throughout the Law Library.  Please put your cell phones and pagers on vibrate and conduct quiet phone conversations either outside of the Law Library or near the Law Library restrooms.  If you listen to any form of audio, use headphones and keep the volume low.  Please limit conversations in open study areas and if you want to work in a group, please use a study room.  When using group study rooms please be respectful of your neighbors and keep discussions under control, the walls are not soundproof.

Free Coffee During Finals!

The Law Library staff invites law students to stop by the Circulation Desk weekday mornings during finals for a cup of coffee.  You supply the spill-proof cup and we will supply the coffee.

Weekdays, Monday – Friday, starting April 23rd and ending May 4th.

Good luck on finals!
