General Counsel of LegalZoom to Speak at Access to Justice Lecture October 9

ABA President William Hubbard was quoted as saying the legal profession “must develop a new model to meet the needs of the underserved.” For many years the profession has mostly paid lipservice to addressing the needs of the middle class and small business consumers. Attempts to evolve the traditional model of delivery have fallen short of the mark, and a truly “new” model of delivery has taken root.

Alternative solutions and fledgling startups here and abroad are stepping up and gaining ground; the UK allows businesses owned by for-profit corporations. I want to take up the gauntlet thrown down by President Hubbard and imagine a law firm that is designed to meet this need – what should it look like, what can it do and how will it operate? What will the future of law need to look like if it wants to serve these forgotten consumers?
