Congratulations to our new Akron Law ACLU Executive Board!

Please join us in welcoming our new American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Executive Board:

President: Cinda Bourgeau

Vice President: Andres Diaz

Secretary: Rimma Avanesyan

Treasurer: Kate Haberle

Since its founding in 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been the guardian of liberty, working in the nation’s courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve individual working rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and the laws of the United States.

We are excited to leave the Akron Law Chapter of the ACLU in such capable hands and look forward to great things next year! Make sure to congratulate these students when you see them!

Don’t miss out! Come try out for Akron Law’s Trial Team THIS SATURDAY!!

Don’t let this opportunity pass you by! Trial Team Tryouts are only held once a year & you don’t want to miss our 2015-2016 season!

Why? Competing on our Trial team will benefit you by:

  • Networking: you will be competing as an advocate in front of trial attorneys and judges both locally and nationwide!!
  • Build your resume: Trial Team experience is something employers look for on your resume! Anyone from a boutique firm to a large government office will tell you that experience in mock trial prior to graduation makes your resume stand out! Why? That means you have experience trying cases in real courtrooms, you can think on your feet, & you know how to work on a team!
  • Job opportunities: Many of our current and past trial team members have gained employment because of their experience on our trial team
  • Experience: you will work 1-on-1 with seasoned trial attorneys who will coach & mentor you, perfecting your advocacy skills for a whole semester, an experience you will not have after graduation! Not to mention, you will actually get to try a real(ish) case from open to close! Something even real attorneys seldom do!

Please email Rachel Smick at rls173@zips.uakron.edu to get on the schedule and get a copy of the materials for tryouts. You still have plenty of time! All you need to do is prepare either a 5 minute opening statement or a 5 minute closing argument (your choice!) & rest assured, our current trial team members will be there to help every step of the way!

Our team is run by Larry Sutter, and the majority of the coaches are successful trial attorneys at the Law Firm of Sutter O’Connell. Please go to their website for more information about their firm and our coaching staff:  http://www.sutter-law.com/
