Like the successful racial justice pioneers led by Justice Thurgood Marshall who came before her, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as chief architect of the five-decade effort to forge the path to vindication of women’s constitutional rights to equality under the law.

The decades between 1964 and 2021 have borne witness to unprecedented advances for women across lines of race, class, disability and LGBTQ status – from the days of stark and legalized inequality in employment, education, health, politics, property ownership, and financial rights, to today, when a woman lawyer of color sits as Vice President of the United States.

This panel will focus not only on Justice Ginsburg’s extraordinary role in the legal battle for gender equity, but also on the vibrant, dynamic and complex context from which the modern women’s movement and its powerful leaders arose. What was the world like for women as Justice Ginsburg began her trailblazing work, and how did she forge a way forward among strong and divergent forces then and throughout her remarkable career.

Through a conversation among women leaders in law who personally knew and worked with Justice Ginsburg, the panel will seek to provide deeper insight into the Justice’s towering achievements as well as her disappointments, bringing to life the enormity of what has been achieved but also what must now be vigorously protected and enhanced.

Speakers include:
Ria Tabacco Mar – Director, Women’s Rights Project, American Civil Liberties Union
Margo Schlanger – Wade H. and Dores M. McCree Collegiate Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School
Wendy Webster Williams – Professor Emerita, Georgetown Law; Biographer for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Drucilla Ramey (Moderator) – Dean Emerita, former Executive Director, the Bar Association of San Francisco and the National Association of Women Judges
