Dean Wilson and Dean Thomas invite all students to an open meeting with the visiting American Bar Associate team on Monday, April 4th at 5pm in Quaker Plaza A.

Every seven years, the American Bar Association (ABA) reaccredits the law school.  The reaccreditation process involves a visit to the school by a team of professors and experts from across the nation.  They visit the school for three days, observing classes and meeting with all constituencies including faculty, staff, and most importantly, students.  They want to hear from you about what you love about Akron Law, so please attend.

The final Constitutional Law Discussion forum for the semester will be Tuesday, March 29th from noon to 1:00 PM in Plaza B at Quaker Square.  Professor Wilson Huhn will moderate the discussion topic: “The Presidential Election, The Supreme Court, and The Constitution.”  Please come and express your opinions, listen to your colleagues, and debate the critically important constitutional issues that have arisen in this election.  Pizza and soda will be provided!

Student Fellowship Program Seeks Applicants for Center for Constitutional Law

The Center for Constitutional Law (CCL) at Akron seeks applications for its student fellowship program. The Center expects to award two or three fellowships to upper-level students for the 2016-2017 academic year. These fellowships are part of the Con Law Center, one of only four centers established by Congress to promote research and public education on constitutional law. Center fellows conduct research for CCL faculty, engage in mentored research (GWRs), maintain social media sites, assist with conferences and programming, help with undergraduate outreach and competitions, and edit the ConLawNOW online journal. Interested students should send a resume and statement of interest to Con Law Center director Professor Tracy Thomas at thomast@uakron.edu by March 10th. For more information about the work of the Center, go to http://http://www.uakron.edu/law/curriculum/areas/constitutional-law.dot

Social Justice and Women’s Rights Advocate Sandra Fluke to Speak

On March 9 from 7-9pm, Social Justice and Women’s Rights Advocate Sandra Fluke will be speaking in Ballroom A in the University of Akron Student Union, with the topic of “Making our Voices Heard.”

Sandra Fluke is a Georgetown Law graduate and a well-known attorney who is famous for, in February of 2012, being denied the right to testify before Congress by Congressional Republicans on the need for women’s own private insurance to cover contraception, with Congress instead choosing to listen to panel of all men about the matter. Later that month she was granted permission to testify before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, and went on to be a featured speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She is also known as one of the co-founders of the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which successfully lobbied legislation allowing LGBTQ, teen, and other victims of intimate partner violence to access civil orders of protection.  Her work has been honored by the American Federation of Teachers, American Constitution Society, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, National Partnership for Women and Families, NOW, Women’s Campaign Fund, and many more.
