Attention students graduating in December and/or planning to take the February 2014 Ohio Bar Examination:

The Deadline for the Supreme Court of Ohio Office of Admissions to receive your Application to Take the Bar Examination is November 1, 2013.

A form required as part of the application packet is the Character Certificate, which must be signed by Dean of Students Carolyn Dessin. Please submit to Terri Bisesi at tbisesi@uakron.edu for processing as soon as possible. We will notify you when form is ready for pick up. Thank you!

DO NOT DELAY!

Each form takes time to process.

PURPOSE: If you are a first or second year law student, you are considering or definitely planning to sit for the Ohio bar exam, and you have NOT yet submitted your required preliminary bar application (“Application to Register as a Candidate” form), then you should absolutely plan to attend this FREE workshop. This program is open to all law students.

Topics addressed will include:

¨ The Ohio bar application process

¨ Character and Fitness (issues, problems, investigations)

¨ The level of scrutiny given to the bar applications

¨ Appropriate and thorough responses to the bar application questions

CQE Clinic Volunteer Training, Friday, October 18, 2013, 5 p.m.

Our next free Certificate of Qualification for Employment (CQE) clinic is Saturday, October 19! We’re very excited to be providing opportunities for ex-offenders in Summit County to take a step toward gaining employment and independence!

We are looking for students to volunteer from 12:15-4:30p on Saturday, October 19. The clinic will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church, 1530 Virginia Ave., Akron. The time you volunteer can be applied toward your graduation requirement as pro bono limited means hours.

There will be a training on Friday, October 18, 5-6:15p at the law school for our volunteers. Exact location in the law school will be announced at a later date.

The time you’re at training will count toward your pro bono limited means hours as well.

Planning on taking the Patent Bar?

Practicing Law Institute (PLI) goes around to schools every year to talk to students

about careers in Patent Law and the Patent Bar Exam. On Monday October 7th at

noon in room 167, one of their principal lecturers, Eugene Quinn of IPWatchdog.com,

(who teaches their patent bar review course) will be speaking to Akron Law students

interested in taking the Patent Bar Exam. If you are planning on taking the Patent

Bar, please join us for lunch that day.

MESSAGE FROM DEAN DESSIN REGARDING TRANSFER OF CREDITS TOWARD YOUR LAW DEGREE

Dear Students:

This is a reminder that we will ONLY transfer credits from elsewhere in the University toward your JD if you complete the Transfer of Graduate Credits form, which is available at:

This applies whether you are in a joint degree program or not. To ensure that the credits will count toward the JD, you should complete the form at the beginning of any semester in which you take graduate coursework that you wish to count toward your JD.

This is also a reminder that overloads (more than 16 credits for full-time students OR more than 10 credits for part-time students) must be approved through my office. For purposes of determining overloads, we count JD credits PLUS any other credits taken in the same semester elsewhere in the University that you plan to count toward your JD. If you register for an unauthorized and impermissible overload, we will not count the unauthorized credits toward your JD. This could have the effect of delaying your graduation.

Therefore, if you have taken or try to take more than 16 credits as a full-time student or 10 credits as a part-time student in any semester, whether at the law school or elsewhere in the University, and have not received prior authorization for those additional credits, they will NOT be counted as credits toward your minimum of 88 credits to earn your JD degree.
