JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW

LAW FACULTY APPROVES:

JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW

At its meeting earlier this month, the law faculty voted to create a joint J.D./LL.M. program in Intellectual Property Law, effective fall 2011.  Under the program, a student would have to complete 100 credit hours of study, including 24 credit hours in intellectual property-related courses, earn an overall 3.0 GPA in IP courses, and satisfy all current requirements for the J.D. degree.   Included within the 24 credit hours would be a six-credit thesis, which would also satisfy the GWR requirement.  Up to 12 credits of IP-related course work at the J.D. level could be credited towards satisfaction of the LL.M. requirements. It is anticipated that a student could meet these requirements during three years of full-time study, plus summer study.  Students should apply for the program no later than the beginning of their second year of study.

At the same meeting, the faculty also approved changes to the current LL.M. requirements.  The number of required credits has been reduced from 30 to 24; all students would be required to enroll in Fundamentals of Intellectual Property (formerly Introduction to Intellectual Property); and all students would have to take a course in either patent, copyright or trademark law, as well as at least one international IP course.

An informational meeting regarding the new program will be held within the next few weeks.  Stay tuned for date/time/location.

In the meantime, please contact either Professor Samuels at Samuels@uakron.edu or Assistant Dean Thorpe at LThorpe@uakron.edu if you have any questions.

Last Call for Admission Ambassadors

Attention Faculty and Students:

The Admissions Office will soon begin matching admitted applicants with faculty and student ambassadors as part of our recruitment efforts for the fall 2011 entering class. If you have not yet registered to be an admission ambassador, it is not too late. Registration is easy – just click the link below and fill in the registration form:

http://www.uakron.edu/law/admissions/ambassador.dot

The commitment extends through the end of the spring semester and consumes roughly 10-20 minutes per week. The more people who volunteer to be ambassadors, the fewer admitted applicants each person will contact (i.e., many hands make light work).

Whether or not they ultimately enroll here, admitted applicants often tell us that their interactions with current faculty and students positively affected their opinion of Akron Law, so it is important to have the cooperation of as many students and faculty as possible.

If you have any questions, or if you can’t remember if you’ve already signed up, please e-mail Adam Messner at apm@uakron.edu.

Admissions – Volunteers Needed

The Admissions Office is seeking law students to assist with our Discover Law Day on Saturday, February 19, 2011. Volunteers are requested as follows:

Check-In and Welcome – 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: One or two students are needed to assist with check-in of our guests. This will involve distributing information packets, shaking hands, smiling, and being friendly.

Building Tours – 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Several students are needed to guide 20-minute building tours before the panel discussion. If you have never given a tour of the building before, don’t worry – I will provide you with notes to help you along.

Student/Alumni Panel – 1:15 pm – 2:00 pm: A mix of full-time and part-time students is needed for a 30-minute panel discussion about life as a law student. Most of the people in attendance at this event will be applying for admission to the fall 2011 entering class or later, so their level of familiarity with law school will likely be fairly low. This panel is about the basics – how much do you study per week, where do you live, how does law school affect your relationship with your wife/husband/family, what you like about law school, what you don’t like, etc. Each panelist will have 3-5 minutes to speak individually, and there will be approximately 5-10 minutes for questions from the audience.

If you are available to help, please e-mail Ivy Washington-Marshall (ikw1@uakron.edu) at your earliest opportunity.

The Admissions Office has historically received a tremendous amount of support from the student body for our events. Your continued assistance is extremely important in making these open houses successful. Thank you so much for your help, and we appreciate your support!
