Symplicity Job No. 2283 – Each summer, the City of Cleveland Department of Law seeks law students for unpaid legal clerkships.  Akron Law students can apply for funding through the Law School’s Public Interest Law Program or can speak to Prof. Spring about obtaining credit. The position provides a unique and unforgettable opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a public sector environment that has produced a U.S. Supreme Court Justice and a federal cabinet secretary among other distinguished alumni.  It is also a chance to assist attorneys who represent the City of Cleveland—and its mayor, council members, and departments—in transactional work and civil and criminal litigation.

 Clerking for the 82+ lawyer Department of Law offers broad exposure to the legal profession in an environment widely renowned for its challenge, excellence, creativity, integrity, and decency.  The Department of Law’s Civil Division is divided into seven sections:  Litigation; Labor and Employment; Health, Environment, and Enterprise Funds; Public Safety; Legislation and Finance; Real Estate and Development; and Code Enforcement.  The Department’s Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor crimes in Cleveland and reviews felony cases to determine whether they should be bound over to a grand jury for county prosecution.

 The Law Department’s summer program consists of: challenging work in a broad range of practice areas; instruction in governmental law; feedback on legal research and writing; profession-skills workshops; volunteering for the community; and guest speakers.  Although the 2011 dates have not been finalized, the summer program generally runs from late May/early June through the first week of August.  Positions are also available during the academic year in a less structured program.  Note that due to budget constraints, all available positions in 2011 will be unpaid—but the rewards will be great.  In addition, you may receive academic credit from your law school, use federal work-study dollars, receive a public-interest scholarship, or seek a stipend from an organization such as a bar association.  The Law Department will assist in securing any necessary approvals, but the individual law clerks are primarily responsibility for making such compensation arrangements.  The deadline for submission is March 8, 2011.   Visit their web site at www.cleveland-oh.gov.  Application instructions available on Symplicity.

Law School announces David Dowd Award

SUMMER JOB PLACEMENT AWARD

$2000.00 minimum to one upper division law student 

Must work 20 hours per week for not less than 10 weeks

 APPLICATION DEADLINE: APRIL 1, 2011

 The School of Law is accepting applications for the David D. Dowd Sr. Memorial Award named in tribute to a distinguished attorney dedicate to public service and created by Judge David D. Dowd, Jr. upon the 25th anniversary of his service in the federal judiciary.  Dowd Awards are directed to Akron Law students interested in seeking professional careers in public service following graduation. 

 Eligibility:

  1. Completed your second year by the Spring of 2010
  2. Shown a commitment to public service
  3. Capable of working  20 hours per week the summer of 2011 for minimum  of ten weeks in a public service position
  4. Committed to working in a public setting upon graduation

 Placements this summer – in order of preference:

1st Preference:      The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, The Stark County

Prosecutor’s Office, The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office;

law departments for Akron, Canton, Massillon; and Public

Defender’s Offices in Summit and Stark counties

 2nd Preference:      The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio or

The Public Defender’s Office for the District

 3rd Preference:      Other prosecutors’ or law directors’ offices

 4th Preference:      Other not already listed public service agencies

 The student will be expected to work 20 hours per week for not less than 10 weeks.
