About the Office: The Servicemembers and Veterans Initiative addresses the unique challenges that servicemembers face while on active duty, that veterans face upon returning home, and that families face when a loved one is deployed. The initiative focuses on three areas: enforcement, education and access to justice. In terms of enforcement, the initiative seeks to extend the expertise and resources needed to enforce the civil and criminal statutes protecting the rights of servicemembers, veterans, and their families to lawyers and investigators throughout the Department, allowing us to expand and coordinate our enforcement efforts. We are also promoting information sharing among federal, state, and local enforcement agencies, so that they too can use all of the tools at their disposal. With regard to education, we will make sure that servicemembers, veterans, and their families have access to information about their rights and who to contact to report abuse. And finally, in terms of access to justice, the initiative is using grants and other resources to support the efforts of courts, law enforcement, and other organizations to respond appropriately to the specialized circumstances of servicemembers and veterans in the criminal and civil justice systems.
Job Description: The law student intern selected for this position will work directly with the Director and Assistant Directors of the initiative in compiling the current resources of the Department of Justice with regard to servicemember and veterans issues, research specific areas of the legal protections provided to servicemembers, provide input on suggested legislation to assist servicemembers and veterans, and provide support for intragovernmental meetings and base visits organized by the initiative.
Qualifications: The initiative is seeking second or third-year law, or joint degree or LL.M. student enrolled at least half-time. Student must be in good academic standing and will be required to provide official documentation from their school. Student should possess superior research and writing skills, an eye for detail, a desire to work as part of a small team of professionals, and a commitment to service member and veterans issues. Interns must be able to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week for 8 to 10 weeks in the summer.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens; dual citizens will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants further must meet the residency requirement. Specifically, for a total of three years (not necessarily consecutive years) of the five years immediately prior to applying for a position, the applicant must have: (1) resided in the U.S.; (2) worked for the U.S. overseas in a Federal or military capacity; or, (3) been a dependent of a Federal or military employee serving overseas.
