Overview: The Summit County Legal Defender is looking to hire an intern to perform client intake and act as student volunteer coordinator for the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative Program. This is a PAID position.

Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Supreme Court of Ohio seeks applications for a judicial extern for the 2014 summer term. All students, including students of color, LGBT students, female students, and “non-traditional” students, are welcome in chambers.

The externship is expected to run from Monday, May 18 through Friday, July 17, 2015. (The dates are subject to change, pending the court’s docket and administrative calendar.) Students accepted into the program may seek academic credit but are not required to do so.

The successful applicants for this program will have excellent research, analytical, writing and interpersonal skills. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of the work involved, the successful applicant must also be mature, responsible, reliable and discrete. A background check, including drug testing and criminal records search, may be required for this position.

Judicial externs will work with Chief Justice O’Connor’s legal staff on various tasks. The primary focus of the externs’ work will be review and analysis of parties’ arguments for discretionary review of intermediate appellate court decisions. Judicial externs will prepare memoranda that summarize the relevant facts, claims, and law of particular cases, and make recommendations as to the disposition of those discretionary appeals, including a suggestion on whether the Ohio Supreme Court should hear the case. (The process is similar to the analysis undertaken on petitions for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.) Research projects may also be assigned to the extern, and students may also work on opinions.

In addition, externs must attend oral arguments held by the court over the summer session. Externs will also meet with attorneys and judges who participate in the networking and mentoring components of the externship program.

ABA JOHN J. CURTIN, JR. JUSTICE FUND
2015 SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is seeking motivated law student interns to apply for stipends available for the Summer 2015 Program. These students should have a position offered, contingent on funding, from a qualified organization.

The Commission on Homelessness and Poverty manages an annual fellowship for law school students interested in issues pertaining to homelessness. This is the last week to apply for a summer clerkship at the Institute for Justice. IJ is the national law firm for liberty and clerkships are a great way to get a foot in the door. Clerks are an integral part of our team. We rely on them for legal research that will factor into our strategic litigation for years to come as well as work on our current cases. Some of our hottest cases right now:

– Ending the abuse of civil forfeiture (The Philadelphia Daily News reports that we’re shaming the DA into submission)
– An eminent domain case in Atlantic City, New Jersey that just garnered over 100,000 signatures on Change.org
– Galassini v. Town of Fountain Hills, where we’re challenging Arizona’s definition of a political committee (spoiler: it’s an unintelligible 183 word sentence, includes a woman who emailed 23 friends to make posters about a road bond issue, and it’s unconstitutional)
– Ocheesee Creamery v. Putnam and Newton where our client simply wants to label her pure, pasteurized skim milk as “pasteurized skim milk,” but the government has banned her honest label unless she injects the milk with an artificial additive.
– Defending Texas craft brewers who are forced to give away a valuable part of their business to distributors just to make beer distributors wealthier
