Application for ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

Applications are now open for the American Bar Association – Section of Litigation’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program.

The program is a full-time (32 hours per week), six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first or second-year diverse law students. The application deadline is January 11, 2019.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrpresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, women, students who are economically disadvantaged and students who identify as LGBT.

Internships are available in several locations in California, Illinois, and Texas. In addition, we offer internships in the following cities: Phoenix, AZ; Washington, DC; Miami, FL; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA (including Camden, NJ); and Seattle, WA. Students may indicate geographic location preferences on their applications, but may not request judges or courts. Interns will receive an award of $2,000.

Internships for students with an Intellectual Property Law focus will be offered in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Texas, and Washington, DC. Students can indicate their interest on the application. These specialized spots are limited and any student applying to the program with a request for specialization will also be considered for general litigation internships.

Research interns will work throughout the academic year to provide meaningful program and project analysis. Summer employment may be available on a limited basis.

Position Responsibilities: Research the patent history of potential candidates for induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Identify the total number of U.S. patents issued to the candidate and confirm if the patents are still active. Are there trademarks or copyrights associated with an inventor’s work? If possible, identify the key or foundational patents for the candidate. Identify any lawsuits/litigation pertaining to the candidate’s intellectual property, report on the outcomes of the legal actions, and describe if the outcomes have affected the validity of the candidate’s patents. In a case of invalidation of a key patent, determine if the ruling invalidated all other patents of the candidate in that invention area as a result, or if there are still valid patents in that invention area for which the candidate could be recognized. Does the invalidation of a patent potentially impact patents by other inventors in the same invention area? Handle and protect confidential and sensitive information with integrity. Manage data collection projects. Assist staff in the design and maintenance of online databases. Prepare reports, documents, and presentations. Assist in the design, execution, and evaluation of research projects.

Qualifications: 1L (second semester), 2L, or 3L. Students seeking Joint JD/MBA or IP focused are preferred, but not required. High level of motivation and self-management. Detail oriented. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong computer skills.

Hours: This is a part-time position working 10-20 hours per week. The schedule is flexible.
