Law Clerk Position

The Egyptian-American Rule of Law Association (EARLA) seeks a second or third year law student to serve as a pro bono law clerk for ten weeks.  EARLA is a non-profit organization that provides technical legal assistance to promote the rule of law inEgypt. Law clerks work virtually from home or in EARLA’s Washington, DC office on various substantive projects, including but not limited to, drafting policy papers on various aspects of Egyptian law, analyzing ongoing changes in Egypt’s legal system and politics, raising public awareness about rule of law in Egypt through social media, assisting in fundraising, attending conferences on behalf of EARLA, and preparing for and attending high profile public policy panels at leading think tanks.

EARLA will consider the following criteria when making its hiring decision:

  • Strong interest in rule of law, international law, and theMiddle East
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Excellent legal writing skills
  • Strong legal research skills
  • Ability to multi-task under short deadlines
  • Willingness to perform administrative tasks
  • Fluency in Arabic speaking or reading is preferred but not required
  • Ability to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week during the semester and 15 hours per week during the summers

 Duties: To perform legal research and draft legal memorandum on a variety of corporate legal topics including, but not limited to, labor and employment, trade compliance, international legal topics, general corporate matters and intellectual property.   Perform due diligence tasks on merger and acquisition projects such as summarizing material contracts and other document review related tasks.  Perform basic contract review under attorney supervision.  Prepare power point presentations on legal topics.  Coordinate and manage miscellaneous projects as assigned.  If necessary, assist on litigation discovery tasks under attorney supervision.

 

Requirements and Preferred QualificationsEnrollment in an ABA accredited law school; Top 25% class rank preferred; 3.0 minimum G.P.A.; Second year students preferred, but will consider first year students who have completed legal research and writing; Intermediate to proficient level of experience with Microsoft office (Word, Excel, and Power Point); Experience with Lexis Nexis and/or Westlaw and other online legal research sources; Prior corporate experience helpful but not required (i.e., human resources, accounting/finance, etc.); Excellent written and verbal communication skills required

 

Position Specifics:   Minimum of 30 hours/week beginning mid-May and ending mid-August; must be flexible to work additional hours as required.  Position may be converted to part-time work in fall of 2012.  Pay:  $25/hour.  Please note that this summer position is not likely to result in full time employment upon graduation.
