Equal Justice Works has extended the Fellowship application deadline to November 10 for several specific project types. Equal Justice Works has confirmed funding in the following categories and highly encourages students to apply in these areas:

  • LGBTQIA candidates of color serving LGBTQIA communities of color in NYC
  • Immigration or Veterans projects in Seattle, WA
  • Agriculture or poverty alleviation projects in Davenport and Betendorf Iowa and Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline Illinois

Akron, OH – Director of Inmate Assistance Program – Law Clinic at The University of Akron

AkronLawJobs No. 8909  Overview:  Seeking students to work in the Inmate Assistance Paid position – $8.50 per hour up to 20 hours per week. Travel to Summit County Jail once a week, meet with inmates who have legal questions, and research and draft letters back to the inmates on Monday mornings, meeting with inmates who have legal questions, researching and drafting letters back to inmates.  Students interested in developing interviewing, research, and writing skills should apply. Our clinic graduates use their skills in civil and criminal contexts as Public Defenders, County Prosecutors, Legal Aid lawyers, judicial law clerks, and civil practitioners.

Spring or Summer Externship – University Hospitals Compliance Dept.

AkronLawJobs No. 8826 Overview: The Compliance and Ethics Department at University Hospitals is responsible for ensuring that all health care providers and business operations are in full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as our own internal policies. The department’s mission is to create a culture committed to the highest standards of ethics in the workplace.

Duties: Law students working in the C&E Department will have the opportunity to be involved in all the facets of the Department’s work. Some of the Compliance and Ethics Department at University Hospitals is responsible for ensuring that all health care providers and business operations are in full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as our own internal policies. Some of the projects that the extern can expect to be engaged in include: 1) Assisting Compliance Officer in responding to guidance requests from employees; 2) Assist Compliance Officer and Privacy Officer with investigation of suspected violations, including fact-finding, document reviews, and interviews; 3) Conduct legal research and prepare memorandum on compliance-related issues; 4) Prepare and deliver short presentations to the department regarding practical application of policies, enforcement trends, or recent significant events; 5) Participate in assessing the organization’s compliance risks through both formal and informal means, such as auditing and monitoring; and 6) Accompany Compliance Officer in hospital rounding and meetings with hospital leaders.

Location: UH Management Services Center at 3605 Warrensville Center Road in Shaker Heights, and travel by car with a Compliance Officer to other UH locations in northeast Ohio.

Prerequisites: 2Ls. This externship is for students who have a demonstrated interest in health law. Students must have completed at least one Health Law class prior to beginning the Externship or, in the alternative, have a degree or work experience in a health field.

How to apply:  Resume, Short writing sample, Cover Letter which specifies the following: 1) Health Law Class or Classes that the student will have completed prior to the start of the externship; 2) any previous healthcare experience including work experience; 3) the number of hours per week the student can be on-site during the externship, and 4) the student’s availability for an on-site interview on November 8th and November 9th. Ward Law Office LLC is a boutique intellectual property law firm, located in Tiffin, Ohio.  The firm is growing and has an immediate full-time opening for an associate patent or trademark attorney.  Candidates must work well independently, be highly motivated, possess initiative, and have strong research and writing skills. Preference will be given to candidates with either an undergraduate or advanced degree in science or engineering, or relevant experience and a strong mechanical aptitude.  USPTO registration is preferred, but is not required.
