Community Service and Networking Opportunity – Law, Love & Chocolate – 2/4/16

Earn community service hours and meet members of the Stark County Bar Association! 8 law student volunteers are needed to assist with Law, Love & Chocolate, an event co-sponsored by the Akron Law Alumni Association and the Stark County Bar Association. Volunteers will provide tours of the Historic Onesto Lofts to event attendees, check coats, assist with carriage rides, and help with the photo booth. We will provide the volunteers with assignments and instructions on the evening of the event before guests arrive.

The event will be held on Thursday, February 4th from 5:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. at The Historic Onesto Lofts in downtown Canton. Pro Bono of Limited Means Opportunity with Community Legal Aid

The Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) at Community Legal Aid is seeking law students who are interested in volunteering, but only have limited time available. We are looking for students interested in volunteering for five (5) hours only. The work mostly involves two of our programs. The Peace of Mind Bankruptcy By-Pass Program is designed to inform clients regarding their rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You will be responsible for reviewing creditors and looking up the correct address for proper Notice. The second program is our Wills clinic. You will be responsible for drafting simple estate planning documents: Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Powers of Attorney and Living Wills.

Pro Bono of Limited Means Opportunity

A pro bono of limited means research project is available in December. The project must be completed by December 31, 2015. Interested students will work at the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority to collect data for a grant proposal. The project may involve up to 30 hours. Volunteers needed for Angel Tree Celebration – earn community service/limited means hours

Angel Tree provides Christmas gifts to children of incarcerated parents. The Angel Tree Celebration will take place on Saturday, December 12th, 2015 at the Ohio Means Jobs Center located at 1040 E. Tallmadge Ave, Akron OH 44310. Volunteers will assist with the Angel Tree Celebration. Feel free to volunteer in the area of your interest. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers. There is also free parking at the venue.
Summary of essential job functions
• Gift Distribution- 10 volunteers needed
• Arts and Crafts- 4 volunteers needed
• Refreshments- 6 volunteers needed
• Greeters/Hospitality/Santa’s Helper- 8 volunteers needed
• Registration/Information Table- 4 volunteers needed
• Set-up/ Clean-up- 12 volunteers needed

Minimum requirements
• Must be filled with holiday cheer.
• Must be able to commit to attending the event and stay for the entire duration of at least one shift schedule. Shifts will be 8am-12pm and 12pm-3pm. The event will start at 10am and is expected to end by 2pm, allowing an hour for clean-up.
Abilities required
• May require minor lifting up to 25lbs.

Do you have any free time on Thanksgiving Day? Café Hope seeks volunteers to serve a free Thanksgiving dinner from 11-4 on Thursday, November 26, 2015. Volunteers will set up, serve dinner and clean up after dinner. You do not have to volunteer for the entire 5 hours. If you are interested, please contact Professor Joann Sahl, jsahl1@uakron.edu.
