CQE Clinic Volunteer Training – Friday, June 12, 4:30 pm

Our next free Certificate of Qualification for Employment (CQE) clinic is Saturday, June 13th! We’re very excited to be providing opportunities for ex-offenders in Summit County to take a step toward gaining employment and independence!

We are looking for students to volunteer from 9:15a-12:45p on June 13th. The clinic will be held at the Arlington Church of Godl,539 S. Arlington St. Akron, OH 44306. The time you volunteer can be applied toward your graduation requirement as pro bono limited means hours.

There will be a volunteer training on Friday, June 12th, 4:30-6:00pm at the law school. The time you’re at training will count toward your pro bono limited means hours as well.

If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions, please e-mail Sarah at smw87@zips.uakron.edu. You can also learn more about the clinic at our website: http://www.uakron.edu/law/clinical/cqe-clinic.dot.

Expungement Clinic seeking student volunteers

The Expungement Clinic helps low-income Summit County residents seal the record of their criminal convictions. A sealed record enables many people better access to jobs, housing, and volunteer opportunities. Students will learn integral skills in the legal field including filing paperwork with the court, drafting motions, interviewing real clients, and communicating with clients both through the mail and over the phone. Students who are eligible for a legal intern certificate will have ample opportunities to appear in court and present an oral argument.

A student commitment to the Expungement Clinic can be for as few or as many hours as the student pleases. The only requirement is that you devote enough time to attempt to contact your clients at least twice a week. All hours qualify as Pro Bono Limited Means.

There are now two different volunteer opportunities to accommodate night and non-traditional students. After attending a training, students can volunteer at our Saturday events without maintaining a regular presence during normal business hours.

There will be a training session the week of May 25th. Interested students should contact Russel Nichols at russel.nichols@gmail.com.

Reentry Clinic seeks law students for Clemency Project!

The University of Akron Reentry Clinic seeks students to work in the Clemency Project. This is one of four in-house reentry clinics staffed by volunteer law students. The Clemency Project assists low-income clients with trying to obtain a pardon from the governor of Ohio. Low-income clients who have multiple criminal convictions are often unable to obtain employment or unable to use their professional degrees. Law students interview the client and assist the client with completing the clemency application. Students also may have the opportunity to attend a hearing before the Ohio Parole Board. The clinic requires no more than one hour per week. Please contact Professor Joann Sahl, jsahl1@uakron.edu, with questions or if you are interested in volunteering in the clinic.

Community Service and Networking Opportunity

Earn community service hours and network with Akron area entrepreneurs!  Two law student volunteers are needed to assist with the NEXT Ohio Internet Conference, an event sponsored exclusively by Thompson Hine.  Volunteers will assist with event set up, registration and other duties.

The event will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 5:30pm – 10:30pm at Quaker Station.  We will need the volunteers to arrive by 4:00pm and stay until 7:30pm. Networking will take place from 7:30 – 10:30pm and volunteers are encouraged to stay and make connections.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Suzanne Brittain, Director of Marketing and Communications at smb7@uakron.edu or 330-972-8619.
