Street Law Seeks Volunteers

The Street Law Program at the Akron Bar Association is looking for two more law students to volunteer at local high schools.  Street Law is a practical elective course taught throughout many high schools in the Summit County high schools. The time commitment will be 1-2 hours a week, but will still be a valuable opportunity to get involved with the local community. Please email streetlaw@akronbar.org if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions.

Volunteers needed for Street Law – earn community service hours

Volunteers are needed for a Street Law event for high school students from throughout Summit County. This is a great event for those students and a great opportunity for us to provide service that is right up our alley.

This year’s event is on Monday, April 29, at the Inn at Quaker Square. The law students will lead small group discussions. The organizers provide brief descriptions of several topics. The students (ideally in groups of no more than 8) sit at tables.  They discuss three issues over 1 ½ hours, led by attorneys, law students, and law school faculty. The discussion leaders move from table to table in a round-robin format.

The discussions will occur at approx. 9:45-11:15 on Monday, April 29.

Please let me know whether you can help: ab139@uarkon.edu

Community Service Hours – volunteers needed!

Looking for individuals who would be interested in judging Student Congress Debate  on March 23rd at Our Lady of the Elms High School.  The hours will be from 8-3.  Experience in judging Student Congress is not necessary, they will train everyone on what they will be doing.  All volunteers will receive a free lunch.

Please contact Shannon Rote if interested.  Shannon.Rote@Copley-Fairlawn.org

Volunteers needed – Pro Bono Limited Means!

Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project:

The Jerome L. Holub Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project is a collaborative project between the Akron Bar Association, Community Legal Aid, and the law school.  Students will receive substantive training on bankruptcy law and receive practical experience in working with clients.  Law students are responsible for conducting telephone interviews to gather information for the attorney’s review and for completing any necessary follow up investigation and research.  Law students meet with clients in person to gather the documents necessary to build a Chapter 7 bankruptcy file.  Students are provided with the opportunity to attend a 341 Hearing and are trained on using bankruptcy software. When possible, students are given an opportunity to prepare a bankruptcy petition for filing.

Because of the time spent in training, law student volunteers are asked to commit 8 to 10 hours per week, preferably in two or three half-days each week.
