Join SBA in welcoming the new students Friday 8/26 5:30 – 8:00 at Baxter’s!
The Student Bar Association will be hosting a welcome social Friday evening after the new first year students finish up their orientation activities. Please join us in welcoming them! This is simply an opportunity for incoming 1L’s to meet current students, for mentees to meet their mentors, and to get to know everyone in an informal setting. All students are encouraged to attend for a laid-back evening to wrap-up orientation week and kick off the school year. Come catch up with your classmates, get to know the new students, and enjoy some great food and drink specials. We hope to see you there!

Almost half a million immigrants are placed into immigration detention annually in a network of over 250 county and state jails, for-profit prisons, and federally administered facilities. Congress has mandated an immigration detention bed quota requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to lock-up an average of 34,000 immigrants in detention on any given day. People placed in these jail-like facilities have no right to free court-appointed attorneys, and people seeking asylum, immigrants who might have a right to stay in the U.S. through family connections, and others who are in need of legal help often are forced to face our complicated and broken immigration system without a lawyer.

On June 23, 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 4-4 decision in United States v. Texas, the case challenging expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). This means that a preliminary injunction temporarily halting the implementation of these initiatives stands. This ruling does not impact the original DACA program launched in 2012. However, it does have a profound and disappointing impact on the millions of would-be eligible immigrants whose lives remain in limbo after the Court’s ruling.

Everyone should have a right and duty to participate in society for the common good, and that we must provide avenues for participation in the U.S. Many immigrants hope to pursue higher education, join the military, or enter the workforce, but their lack of legal status jeopardizes those dreams and exposes them to deportation. All will gather as members of faith communities, children of immigrants, refugees, advocates for the dignity of workers and people concerned about the protection of vulnerable populations.

The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland will be hosting their annual summer event- Jam for Justice- on Wednesday, June 29 at 5:00 p.m. Enjoy drinks, food and the music of six rock bands- all headlined by local attorneys, judges, and law students! This is a fun event, and a great networking opportunity as well. Law students can get tickets for $25 by calling 216-861-5590. The 2016 Class Gift: The Student Emergency Fund
With our final semester coming to an end, it is now time to truly leave our mark on the Akron Law community by contributing to the Student Emergency Fund. More specifically, this year’s class gift to Akron Law will be to raise additional capital for the Fund. The Student Emergency Fund was established last year by the class of 2015. The fund is intended to help students who face emergency financial situations while in law school, and only Akron Law students can apply for assistance. Additionally, students who receive assistance never have to pay it back.
After speaking with the Administration about what our monetary goal should be, we believe that collectively raising at least $1,500 for the fund is definitely obtainable. For example, just imagine if each 2016 graduate donated at least $10…we would be able to help so many Akron Law students moving forward. Additionally, and yet another really cool reason why you should consider donating to the fund, everyone who contributes will be recognized in the Graduation Packet, which will be distributed at Commencement. Similarly, those who contribute will also be recognized on the Akron Law Honor Roll of Donors, which is distributed annually to all alumni.
Again, this is our, the Class of 2016, way of leaving the Akron Law community in a far better place than when we started. There is no time commitment, or a huge monetary commitment for that matter. We are simply asking you to give what you can and ask a colleague to do the same. Donating to the Fund is just as simple. One can donate by: (a) check payable to UA School of Law, with “Student Emergency Fund” noted on the memo line; (b)completing a credit card donation form; or (c) giving online at http://www.uakron.edu/giving/colleges/. Please direct checks or credit card payments to the attention of Lia Evans, Director of Alumni and Development, at the School of Law. If giving online, follow the link and click “Gift a Gift” under the Law heading. Please be sure to direct the gift to the “Student Emergency Fund.”
The deadline is April 29, but because we are getting this notice out later than usual, students will have until the week before graduation to contribute to the Fund to get their names placed in the Graduation Packet at Commencement.
School’s almost out, let’s make it count!
