IMPORTANT: 2013 Akron Law Review Write-On Competition

Students wishing to compete in the Law Review’s Write-On Competition,

The 2013 Write-On Competition will begin Friday, 5/17/13, at 8 AM.  Instructions for the Write-On Competition and a hypothetical will be available for you to download at that time on TWEN.  You will have until Friday, 5/31/13, at 12 AM to submit your response.  Late submissions will not be graded or considered for a position on the Law Review.

To participate in the Write-On Competition, you will need to have extended your Westlaw password for the summer session in order to have TWEN access.  To access the Write-On Competition course, you will need to add a course to your TWEN page the same way in which you do for your regular or ASP classes.  This course is not yet activated for registration but will be available for you to join by the time the Write-On begins at 8 AM.  If you have not extended your Westlaw password for the summer and if doing so is no longer possible, please email me at jrc130@zips.uakron.edu and I can coordinate a way to email the instructions and the hypothetical to you on the day the Write-On Competition begins.

Please remember that this Write-On Competition is open to all law students who have completed their first year program as defined by the administration of the School of Law.

Students wishing to join the Akron Law Review who rank in the top fifteen (15) percent of their class after completing the first-year program will be automatically invited to join the law review.  As such, those students ranking in the top fifteen percent of their class are not required to compete in the write-on competition to receive an invitation. However, since class rankings will not be released at the time of the write-on competition, we highly encourage all students who have previously ranked in the top fifteen percent of their class to still participate in the write-on competition since their class rank could drop after spring semester grades.

Note Regarding Part Time Students Completing Their First-Year Program this Summer: There will be a second write-on competition in August for those part-time students who complete their first-year program during the summer who are not yet eligible to compete in the first competition.  More information regarding this competition will be sent out in August.

If you have any questions regarding the Write-On Competition, please email me at jrc130@zips.uakron.edu.

Thank you,

Julianna Clark

Changes in Westlaw Access for Graduating Law Students- Wonderful News!

Westlaw has extended access for graduating students through November 2013!

May 2013 graduates must extend their passwords on the Westlaw law school home page by clicking on the “Need Westlaw this summer?” advertisement.   Graduating law students receive 60 hours of usage per month per platform (Westlaw Classic and WestlawNext) through November instead of just through July.

Free Westlaw Printing Ends in May

Free Westlaw printing for The University of Akron law students, faculty and staff will end in May.  Westlaw is removing their printers from all law schools in the United States.  You can still print from Westlaw by sending your print jobs to the law school’s network printers or to your personal printer.

There are new features in WestlawNext that should help you transition from paper to a more ‘green’ digital world.  Electronic file sharing is common in law firms so developing good habits now as a law student helps in preparing you for the work world.

Folders
Use folders to save all your work and easily share with fellow Akron law students or faculty. Your folders are located in WestlawNext in the upper right corner.  Your saved material in the folders is automatically updated by Westlaw and always reflects current law.  There is no limit in the number of documents you can save in your folders.

History
If you forget to save your research in a folder, don’t worry.  Your research history is automatically saved for one year; including all document views and searches.  You can also search within your history or use filters to find specific documents.

If Westlaw is removing their printers, what about Lexis?
Lexis is still committed to supporting their law school printers.  You can still print from Lexis to the free Lexis printer.

Best wishes on their retirement to Dean Aynes and Professors Carro, Koosed and Richert

The School of Law honored four faculty members, who will retire from Akron Law at the end of spring semester, this past Thursday, April 25.  The four have contributed immensely to the character of the law school, and their contributions were memorialized in personal tributes shared with the attendees of colleagues, alumni, community members and students.  As interim dean Elizabeth Reilly summed it up:  “Each has left an indelible mark on this law school.  They may be leaving our halls, but they will never leave our hearts.”

Professor Richard L. Aynes has been with the School of Law for 37 years. Seiberling Chair of Constitutional Law for the balance of 1994. Professor Aynes was appointed Dean of Akron Law in 1995, a position he held through 2007. Beginning in spring 2008 he returned to the faculty as holder of the John F. Seiberling Chair of Law and Director of the Constitutional Law Center. Room Availability During Exam Week

In an effort to provide more study space for students, we are making available to you the times that each of our classrooms is available for your use. There will be no official process by which you will be able to reserve these rooms, and availability is subject to change without notice. Additionally, if you choose to study in one of these rooms, please be out by the time it is marked as unavailable (blacked out). If needed, the Dean’s Office may need to ask you to leave a classroom at any time.

Please note: This is informational only. We will not reserve classrooms for study use. If you find one that is available and empty, you are welcome to use it. You must, however, vacate the room in plenty of time before it is marked as unavailable.

The sheet for each room will also be posted at the door of the classroom, and every effort will be made to update the sheets posted at the door. The copy that is posted here will not be updated, so please defer to the sheets posted at each door.  Please click on the below link to the room availability sheets.
