UA Law List Serve

As some people may have noticed, there is now an Akron Law E-Digest that goes out every morning containing the previous day’s blog posts from https://blogs.uakron.edu/law .  Our goal is to have all general student correspondence including the Career Connection go through this webpage rather than a direct email to the ua-law listserve.  We have done this for a few reasons:

  • Students were complaining on the amount of emails that they were receiving from the Law School daily.
  • All information that is posted into the blog can then be pulled into what is called an RSS feed.  This allows us to pull the important information to various sources including the digital signage screens that are throughout the building.
  • It gives us a centralized point to inform students of everything that is happening throughout the school.

Going forward, we will be posting all information directly to the blog.  The ua-law listserve will still remain active, however after Monday, February 11th; it will only be used for:

  • The daily Akron Law E-Digest
  • Time sensitive items that have deadlines that expire before the digest goes out the following morning
  • Items that we are working on transitioning over to the blog such as the Career Connection .

 The National Law Journal has launched its “Best of NLJ” survey and we are pleased to share that Akron Law is listed in the category of Best IP LL.M. Program.  Below is the link for the survey.  We noted that there are many categories and the Best IP LL.M. category is imbedded in a longer survey (several pages into the survey).  It also appears that there does not have to be a vote cast for every category.  Voting begins January 23 and closes February 10.  We encourage you to vote and please feel free to share this link with others.

Cleveland, OH: Jackson Lewis LLP, a law firm dedicated to representing management exclusively in labor and employment law, is accepting application materials for a potential summer associate position.  Interested candidates should be current second year full-time or third/fourth year part-time students who will graduate in December 2013 or May 2014.  Applicants should have a strong interest in labor and employment law. Classwork in these areas is also helpful, but not required.  The Firm requires candidates in the top 1/3 of their class. If you would like to be considered, you must submit your resume (listing your GPA and class rank); cover letter describing your interest in labor and employment law, interest in working in a large law firm that defends employers in labor and employment matters; relevant coursework (if applicable) and relevant experience; and a writing sample via e-mail to Career Planning Director, Barbara Weinzierl (bcw@aukron.edu) by Monday, February 11 at 12 noon. Attention all Career Connection readers – Important Info from the CPPO

Please note that starting next Friday, February 15, the CPPO will no longer by sending students a separate e-mail with the link to the Career Connection. In order to consolidate communications to all students, the link to the Career Connection will now appear every Friday as an entry on the law school blog/e-mail digest. The Career Connection banner/icon will be the same and you will still click on the banner which will take you to the “log-in” for the Career Connection. So, everything will remain the same except how you access the Career Connection. If you have any questions, please stop by the CPPO.

Don’t miss an exclusive opportunity to meet Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor, Supreme Court of Ohio, at the YPN Speaker Series!The YPN welcomes Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor to the Young Professionals Network Speaker Series luncheon. Chief Justice O’Connor will provide valuable insight and advice to young professionals looking to make their professional mark, as well as share her personal story to how she became Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court.

 

Maureen O’Connor’s election to the Supreme Court in 2002 created its first female majority. Ohio’s voters reelected her in 2008 in a landslide victory in which she carried every one of Ohio’s 88 counties and took approximately 68% of the vote. Two years later, the voters of Ohio again demonstrated their faith in her judgment, management and honesty, electing her the first female Chief Justice in Ohio’s history by a 2-to-1 margin over her challenger. She again carried every county in Ohio. Her election to the Chief Justice’s office marks the latest achievement in a long and distinguished career of public service.

 

Chief Justice O’Connor gained invaluable experience as an attorney, magistrate and common pleas court judge. Despite those successes, she felt compelled to return to the front lines of protecting the public. She became the Summit County Prosecuting Attorney and aggressively prosecuted repeat offenders, violent criminals and public officials who committed ethical violations or improprieties, and lobbied for tougher laws on rape and gang-related offences. Her untiring work earned accolades from victims’ rights groups and educational institutions.

 

The Speaker Series luncheon is sponsored by FirstMerit Bank. Registration, networking and lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the presentation at noon. The event is $20 for Chamber members and $30 for non-members.
