Interested in plaintiff’s work? Network with some of Akron’s best plaintiff’s lawyers

To University of Akron Students with an interest in Plaintiff’s work,

 Last summer, I met with several Akronlaw students to discuss how our Summit County Association for Justice could better serve students and new lawyers.  One of the ideas that came out of that meeting was to make some of our monthly meetings open to students.  We are inviting any students potentially interested in Plaintiff’s work to attend our monthly meeting on October 10, 2012, at the Akron Bar Association, at 12 noon.  Free pizza will be provided.  This is a great networking opportunity and chance to meet some of Akron’s best plaintiff’s lawyers.  Akron Law alum, Rami Awadallah, will give a one hour CLE on utilizing social media in the practice of law. The meeting will conclude shortly after 1:00 p.m.

Winter 2013 Intersession General and Divorce Mediation Course Information

WINTER 2013 INTERSESSION Graduate Courses available for law students (restrictions apply*)

 MEDIATION TRAINING

 OFFERED THROUGH THE CENTER FOR FAMILY STUDIES

Mediation is the fastest growing means of dispute resolution throughout the United States. It is an accepted means of resolving custody cases in Ohio courts. It is also a lifetime skill being taught to students in schools all over the state of Ohio.

The mediation training that is offered includes two courses. Together, the general (12-hour) and the divorce (40-hour) mediation courses meet the Ohio Supreme Court’s requirement of 52 hours of mediation training for receiving court-referred mediations of custody and visitation issues in Ohio.

 ¨       ASSIGNMENTS:

The assignments will be sent by e-mail to registered students at their University of Akron e-mail addresses sometime during the middle of December.         

¨                   REGISTRATION:  The mediation courses will be given during the Spring 2012-2013 intersession — the interim between the Fall and Spring semester. They are considered Spring 2013 classes and will be listed In the Spring 2013 Schedule of Classes that will be listed online. The spring 2013 schedule of classes will be available for viewing online via ZipLine beginning in October 2012. Registration will begin shortly after that. All students are encouraged to register early.

Please note that these classes tend to fill up very quickly, and you should register for them as soon as possible.

 *HOW TO OBTAIN PERMISSION FOR TRANSFER OF CREDITS  and HOW TO REGISTER INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAW STUDENTS

Non-joint degree law students must complete the Request to Transfer Graduate Courses Toward JD Degree located at:

http://www.uakron.edu/law/students/studentservices/docs/Transfer_of_Graduate_Credit_Permission_Form.pdf  and submit to the dean’s office for Assistant Dean Lauri Thorpe’s approval prior to registration.  Instructions and details are included on the request form.

 NOTE:  Joint degree-seeking students are not eligible to receive permission to transfer either mediation course toward their JD degree.

Career Planning Events – week of October 2

1- Thursday, October 4 from 12:30 – 1:30 in Room 151. The Federal Bar Association invites all students to attend a Brown Bag Lunch* with the Honorable Alice Batchelder, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This is a wonderful chance for you to have an informal conversation with Judge Batchelder. *Lunch will be served to those who attend. You must reserve your spot by calling or e-mailing Jeanne Kennedy in the CPPO (jeanne2@uakron.edu or 330-972-5321).  Deadline to RSVP is 12 noon tomorrow, Wednesday, October 3.

 2- Thursday, October 4 at 5:15  — Register now for FEIC Financial, Inc. President Daniel Rossi’s presentation in Room 133: Come and learn how to use your education in the business plan exit industry and about career opportunities in this field! RSVP by Noon on Wednesday, October 3 to jeanne2@uakron.edu to secure a spot. Pizza will be served to those who attend!

 

 

IMPORTANT BAR EXAMINATION INFORMATION & UPCOMING DEADLINES

ATTENTION:   ALL 2nd YEAR FULL-TIME & PART-TIME STUDENTS

If you plan to take the Ohio Bar Exam and have not already done so, your Application to Register as a Candidate for Admission to the Practice of Law must be RECEIVED in the Office of Bar Admissions at the Supreme Court of Ohio by November 15.

 Your required Ohio Bar Certificate of Dean (available on the application link above) must be submitted to Liz Wascak in the law school dean’s office for processing. When your  Certificate of Dean is returned, you will receive an official fingerprint card and instructions where to get fingerprinted.

 These forms take time to process, so please submit in a timely fashion.  Processing in our office and your submission to the bar (mailing time) need to be considered.

Just like Ohio’s certificates, other state’s law school certificates must be submitted to the law school dean’s office, College Program Specialist / Law Registrar Liz Wascak for processing.
