Protect Your Belongings

We would like to remind law students to never leave your valuables alone anywhere in the School of Law.  Your textbooks, book bags, purses, laptops and other belongings can be easily taken in just “30 seconds.”

We welcome visitors to the School of Law and to the Law Library, both those associated with the University and those who are not.  Having open doors, however, also means anyone can come into the building.  It would be wise to always be careful and make it a habit to never leave your belongings unattended.

If you see suspicious behavior, please notify law school employees right away.  You can call the University police yourself by dialing 330-972-2911 (if using a cell phone) or 911 if using a campus phone.

2011 Class Gift

 Why a Class Gift?

 Every year, members of the graduating class contribute funds to begin their legacy as Akron Law alumni and to memorialize their class. The School of Law promotes class gifts to create a tradition of giving among students. Presentation of the class gift will be incorporated into your graduation ceremony. 

 What is the 2011 Class Gift? 

  The 2011 Class gift will be a framed color photograph of the current law school to be placed in the future new law school building. If additional funds are raised, other gift(s) will be considered. Dean Belsky has made the generous offer again this year to match each donation up to $150. Accordingly, by donating $25 you will have actually contributed $50! Furthermore, if you donate $25 now, and pledge to donate $50 in 2012 and $75 in 2013, Dean Belsky will presently match your pledged donation up to $150. This means that if you agree to pledge $150 over a three-year period you will see an immediate doubling of your donation in the amount of $300! Even if you cannot commit to a pledge or currently donate the full $25, please consider a contribution so that you can be part of this legacy.

Mobile Apps for Law Students

Lynn Lenart, from the Law Library, will be giving short presentations on mobile apps for law students during the week of April 4th through April 7th.  If you are interested in learning about some useful apps, then plan on attending one of the presentations. 

What: We will cover 10 apps in 30 minutes.  I will summarize the pros and cons of each app.  We will move quickly through the apps and if time permits, students can share some of their favorite apps.   Plus, I will have an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard available for law students to try out.

Level: Introductory.  This talk is for the novice user or law students who are considering upgrading to a smart phone.

When and Where:  Same session is offered multiple times, so just plan on attending one session.

JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN IP LAW – Sessions Scheduled

LAW FACULTY APPROVES:

 JOINT J.D./LL.M. IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW

At its meeting earlier this month, the law faculty voted to create a joint J.D./LL.M. program in Intellectual Property Law, effective fall 2011.  

INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS SCHEDULED:  Sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm in Room W-210 and 5:00 – 6:00 pm in Room L-151.

Under the program, a student would have to complete 100 credit hours of study, including 24 credit hours in intellectual property-related courses, earn an overall 3.0 GPA in IP courses, and satisfy all current requirements for the J.D. degree.   Included within the 24 credit hours would be a six-credit thesis, which would also satisfy the GWR requirement.  Up to 12 credits of IP-related course work at the J.D. level could be credited towards satisfaction of the LL.M. requirements. It is anticipated that a student could meet these requirements during three years of full-time study, plus summer study.  Students should apply for the program no later than the beginning of their second year of study.

At the same meeting, the faculty also approved changes to the current LL.M. requirements.  The number of required credits has been reduced from 30 to 24; all students would be required to enroll in Fundamentals of Intellectual Property (formerly Introduction to Intellectual Property); and all students would have to take a course in either patent, copyright or trademark law, as well as at least one international IP course.
