IPTLA – Q&A with IP Advisory Council – March 22, 12:15 – 1:15 pm, L-152

All students are invited to attend this opportunity to meet and discuss the field of intellectual property law with the University of Akron Law School Intellectual Property Advisory Council. The Council is made up of members who are experts in the field from around the nation and around the world. It serves an important role in advancing the IP curriculum, as well as fostering relationships with businesses and law firms, assisting students with career planning issues, and matters related to program and resource development. Congratulations to the University of Akron trial teams!

Congratulations to the University of Akron trial teams! The teams reached the final round in each of their spring competitions. The advocates and competitions are listed below.

  • Amanda Bunner, Marissa Pappas, and Nick McGroarty placed second at the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County (ATLAC, formerly Gourley) Mock Trial Competition in Pittsburgh, PA.  In the first round, the team competed against advocates from William and Mary Law School.  After scoring the highest amount of points of all of the teams advocating on behalf of the plaintiff, Bunner and Pappas competed against the team from Duquesne Law School in the final round.   The ATLAC tournament is a unique competition, which focuses on a personal injury suit and provides doctors and medical professional as expert witnesses.  The team was coached by John Rubis (’08) and Caryn Peterson (’07).
  • Tim Cunning and Daniel Leister placed second at the National Tournament of Champions (NTC) Regional Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. Their team lost a split decision to the eventual winner, Chase College of Law. Congratulations should also be extended to the team of JJ Hammerle and Beatriz Trejo who advanced to the semifinal round of the competition. Thirty teams competed in the NTC regional competition. The team was coached by Brian Dodez (‘09) and John Conley (‘08).
  • Daniel Bray, Kevin Kita, Matthew Mohr and Greg Thompson placed second at the American Association of Justice Competition in Pittsburgh, PA. Their team lost a close decision in the final round to a team from Duquesne Law School. The team of Jared Zuercher, Ann Marie Sutter, Carol Tran and Kelsey DiFrancesco lost in the semifinal round to Duquesne, the winner of the competition. The team was coached by Larry Sutter (‘89) and Ryan Melewski (‘09).

Akron Law will match their scholarship awards.

Upcoming Deadlines for July 2011 Ohio Bar Applicants

TO:  May 2011 JD Degree Candidates Preparing to Take the July 2011 Ohio Bar Examination

The following certificate forms for the Ohio Bar Examination have approaching deadlines.  These forms must be certified by the law school, then submitted to the Court so that eligibility to sit for the Ohio Bar Examination may be established. Please check these upcoming deadlines and be sure to submit your forms in time to allow for our processing.  These forms must be submitted to Liz Sauders in The Office of Law Student Services, Dean’s Office, Room 136 of the law building.

  • Law School Character Certificate:  You may drop off the Law School Character Certificate at the law school receptionist.  I will prepare the certificate for Dean Thorpe’s signature. The certificate form will be returned to you so that you may include it in your application packet to the Court.  The deadline to be received (not postmarked) at the Court as per their website:
  • Substance Abuse Instruction Certificate:  You do not need to submit this form to us for completion.  Substance abuse lectures are available two times a year as a school offering from Akron Law.  Therefore, if you attended one of the lectures, we include the completion of this one hour of substance instruction on your Final Law School Certificate.  If you have not attended one of the law school’s Substance Abuse Lectures, make-up lectures are not available through The University of Akron School of Law. Lectures are scheduled through Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) for a fee. Contact their office at 1-800-282-6556. 
  • Final Law School Certificate:  You may drop off the Final Law School Certificate any time prior to the end of spring semester.  I will hold it until graduation on Sunday, May 15, 2011, then send it directly to the Supreme Court of Ohio on Monday, May 16.
