Dean Wilson and Dean Thomas invite all students to an open meeting with the visiting American Bar Associate team on Monday, April 4th at 5pm in Quaker Plaza A.

Every seven years, the American Bar Association (ABA) reaccredits the law school.  The reaccreditation process involves a visit to the school by a team of professors and experts from across the nation.  They visit the school for three days, observing classes and meeting with all constituencies including faculty, staff, and most importantly, students.  They want to hear from you about what you love about Akron Law, so please attend.

Description: Experienced, general-practice solo attorney, focusing on misdemeanor criminal defense and civil litigation is seeking a LEGAL ASSISTANT / LAW CLERK. Willing to teach and mentor a student who anticipates going into private practice. Want to hire a legal assistant / law clerk for 10 hours per week (flexible) to initially perform typical office duties, such as copying, filing, scanning, preparing letters, communication with courts, mailings, internet search, etc. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and familiar with Adobe Acrobat Pro. When the assistant/clerk is comfortable, more responsibilities will follow such as preparation of court documents like pleadings, motions to suppress, legal research with Lexis, phone interviews with potential clients, etc.

The Office of Legal Resources provides research and writing support to the Justices on the non-discretionary portion of the Court’s docket: death penalty appeals, public utility appeals, workers’ compensation appeals, state tax appeals, and attorney regulatory cases. The Office also assists with extraordinary actions filed in the Court, such as mandamus and prohibition actions, state against judges, and provides other assistance as required by the Court. Externs will research legal issues in the various substantive areas noted above, and write legal memoranda based on that research. Externs may also have an opportunity to review case files or court filings, conduct legal research and draft preliminary opinions based on that research.

One position available. The Office of Public Information is the Court’s central communications office. The office manages the Court’s website, publishes the Court’s print publications, responds to media inquiries, and administers the Court News Ohio Program, which includes a daily news website (CourtNewsOhio.gov), a television program, social media feeds, and a monthly print publication. Externs will assist in writing previews about the court’s upcoming cases for the public and media. The externship requires reading legal briefs and writing articles summarizing the case and each side’s positions in language that is easily understandable to a lay audience. Position requires strong writing skills or journalism experience. Also need a willingness and ability to write for a non-legal audience.

Court Services Division – Dispute Resolution Section – Summer 2016 and Fall 2016
One position available. The Supreme Court of Ohio Dispute Resolution Section assists all courts in developing and sustaining dispute resolution services that are accessible to all citizens; provides technical assistance and training to court staff, judges, court personnel and attorneys; provides research related to dispute resolution processes, training, program monitoring and administration of policies and procedures developed in collaboration with the Supreme Court’s Commission on Dispute Resolution which includes members appointed by Chief Justice O’Connor. The Section also provides mediation for Supreme Court and Court of Claims litigants, as well as for disputes among state, county, and local public officials prior to court involvement, to encourage them to develop workable solutions for their differences. This is accomplished by convening the parties in confidential sessions, facilitating the negotiations, and monitoring settlement solutions until the parties have concluded their case. Externs assigned to this department will research dispute resolution training standards and curricula both locally nationally and internationally; research how courts implement mediation programs and provide mediation services compared to the local mediation rules for each court; research dispute resolution resources including videos for education purposes during training and/or write memos and other summaries, create spreadsheets, etc. for research projects. The extern will analyze the use of dispute resolution by Ohio courts, gather information for dispute resolution directory, and review local rules of courts regarding mediation, early neutral evaluation, parenting coordination and arbitration.

The ideal extern would have an interest in dispute resolution and will have taken dispute resolution classes.

Moot Court Honors Society Internal Competition

Moot Court Honors Society will be holding its annual internal competition on Saturday, April 16th. All students who have completed LARW II are welcome to participate.

Cash prizes of $500 and $200 will be awarded to the first and second place competitors, respectively. This is an oral competition only; no written work is required.
