2015 Lawyer to Law Student Mentor Program
Second Year Law Students: Would you like the opportunity to get a glimpse into the practice of law and begin to build your professional NETWORK? The Office of Career Planning & Placement, in conjunction with The Akron Bar Association Liaison Committee, invites you to participate in the Lawyer to Law Student Mentor Program. This program pairs second year University of Akron Law students with local lawyers for the purposes of assisting law students in beginning the transition from law school to law practice, through a one-on-one relationship with practicing attorneys. The mentor provides perspective on the law school experience and its relationship to practice; helps the student understand the nature of different practice areas and types of employers; and has the opportunity to advise the students on networking and career resources. Above all, the mentor is a role model who conveys his/her commitment to the profession and the responsibility that comes with admission to the bar. Specifically, the program provides the opportunity for students and their mentors to participate in suggested activities of their choosing. These activities may include jointly visiting the courthouse or visiting the mentor’s law firm. The mentor and law student initially create their individualized plan, which will consist of activities you choose to meet the particular practice setting of the mentor and your individual goals. You and your mentor will have from January 2015 through June 2015 to get to know one another and plan your activities, but of course you are free to continue a relationship with your Mentor.*To participate in the 2014 Lawyer-to- Law Student Mentoring Program, you must attend one of the MANDATORY Mentor Program Training Sessions: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 12:20 OR 5:15PM. You must turn in a Mentor Program application, along with the included short answer questions, to the Career Planning Office by Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 12 noon.
All students and mentors are also invited to attend the “Meet Your Mentor/Mentee” Reception to be held at the Akron Bar Association Offices on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. This event will include both the law students and the attorney mentors and will provide an introduction to the program and a packet of program materials. Please indicate on the bottom of the application form whether or not you will attend this event. All students are strongly encouraged to attend.
