Expungement Clinic seeking student volunteers

The Expungement Clinic helps low-income Akron residents seal the record of their criminal convictions.  A sealed record enables many people better access to jobs, housing, and volunteer opportunities.  Students will learn integral skills in the legal field including filing paperwork with the court, drafting motions, interviewing real clients, and communicating with clients both through the mail and over the phone. Students who are eligible for a legal intern certificate will have ample opportunities to appear in court and present an oral argument.

A student commitment to the Expungement Clinic can be for as few or as many hours as the student pleases.  The only requirement is that you devote enough time to attempt to contact your clients at least twice a week.  These hours qualify as Pro Bono Limited Means.

There will be three training sessions next week.  These sessions are informational only, and students are welcome to attend simply for a brief overview of the law surrounding sealing of a conviction.  The trainings will be Monday the 12th and Wednesday the 14th at 5:00 PM and Tuesday the 13th at 10:00 AM.

Students with any questions please contact Russel Nichols at russel.nichols@gmail.com.

LAST CHANCE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE AKRON LAW REVIEW [PART-TIME AND FULL-TIME STUDENTS]

The second and final write-on competition for the Akron Law Review is scheduled to begin on August 16th at 8:00 a.m. and to conclude on August 23rd at 11:59 p.m.

Who Can Compete?

  • Any full-time student who did not submit a write-on during the first write-on competition, and has a 2.60 GPA or higher, is eligible to compete. [If you downloaded the prompt during the first write-on, but did not submit a paper, you are still eligible to compete.]
  • Any part-time student who has successfully completed their first year, as defined by the administration, and has a 2.60 GPA or higher, is eligible to compete. [The top 15% of part-time students automatically grade-on.]

*Due to the decreased time frame for the second write-on, there will be a different prompt to accommodate the shorter time period students will have.

We cannot stress enough the importance of becoming a member of the Law Review.  As was evidenced in the On-Campus Interview packet, firms, judges, and employers in general are looking for or expect students to be on Law Review.  More importantly, due to changes made by this year’s board, the time commitment on Law Review will be much more manageable, allowing students to complete higher quality notes and/or comments that are eligible for publication.

If you have any questions, please contact Casey Davis, Editor-in-Chief, at cjd60@zips.uakron.edu or contact Julianna Clark, Executive Editor of Student Writing, at jrc130@zips.uakron.edu.

We hope you will become a member of the Akron Law Review!

Sincerely,

Casey Davis
Editor-in-Chief, 2013-2014 Akron Law Review

July 27 Open House Recap

On July 27, 2013, we hosted an open house for prospective students, most of whom are considering starting law school in the fall of 2014. The program was highly successful: more than 80 guests were in attendance, and many people went out of their way to tell me and Mary how much they enjoyed the event.

Mary and I would like to publicly thank the following individuals for their assistance on Saturday:

  • Gary Spring and Marty Belsky for teaching mock law classes
  • Law student Rachel Scava for assisting with check-in
  • Law students Justin Burns, Jackie Cabonor, Joseph DelGallo, Evan Grasse, Patrick Hanley, Olivia Kotter, Christina McClish, Phil Orenstein, Ashley Wakefield, and Jonathan Wolnik for serving as panelists and tour guides
  • Alumni Jennifer Hamey (‘06), Alan Medvick (‘06), Mike Pfahl (‘04), Jack Pierson (‘82), and Larry Tucker (‘84) for serving as panelists

Events like these simply don’t work without the assistance of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Thanks to all for your help and support.
