THE DAVID D. DOWD, SR. MEMORIAL AWARD

SUMMER JOB PLACEMENT AWARD

APPLICATION DEADLINE:  APRIL 6, 2012

$2000.00 minimum to one upper class law student

Must work 20 hours per week for not less than 10 weeks

 The School of Law is accepting applications for the David D. Dowd Sr. Memorial Award. Named in tribute to a distinguished attorney dedicated to public service and created by Judge David D. Dowd, Jr. upon the 25^th anniversary of his service in the federal judiciary, the purpose of the Dowd Award is to promote a commitment to public service for all lawyers.  Dowd Awards are directed to Akron Law students interested in seeking professional careers in public service following graduation.

 To be eligible, you must:

1. Complete your second year by Spring of 2013
2. Show a commitment to public service
3. Be capable of working  20 hours per week during the summer of 2013 for minimum  of ten weeks in a public service position
4. Be committed to working in a public setting upon graduation

 Placements this summer – in order of preference:

1^st Preference:      The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, The Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office; law departments for Akron, Canton, Massillon; and Public Defender’s Offices in Summit and Stark counties.

 2^nd Preference:     The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio or the Public Defender’s Office for the District

 3^rd Preference:      Other prosecutors’ or law directors’ offices

 4^th Preference:      Other not already listed public service agencies

 The student will be expected to work 20 hours per week for not less than 10 weeks.

 If you are interested in being considered for this award, please submit a cover letter and resume to Kristina Floyd in the Career Planning Office at kmf12@uakron.edu or by hard copy by April 1, 2013. Students must arrange for their own placements with one of the organizations listed above before submitting their applications. Students in the upper 30% of the class will be given preference. Students should list short and long term goals, and explain why the student wishes to work in a particular office, as noted above. A committee will review applications and a student will be selected before the spring term is over. 

Tuesday, April 2 from 4 – 5 p.m. in Room 166 (Faculty/Staff Lounge) — From Law Student to Lawyer and Everything in Between. This informal conversation will allow you to meet, ask question and talk with experienced practitioners about obtaining the legal employment you want, problems regularly faced by lawyers, practice pointers, and whatever else is on your mind. Thursday, April 4 from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in West Hall Room 210–  The Ohio Chapter of the Legal Marketing Association presents: Nuts and Bolts of  a  Law Firm. Learn about marketing, business development, client services and practice development. These are all skills that new attorneys are expected to know, but that law firms won’t teach you! Wednesday, April 10 from 12:20 – 1:10 p.m. and 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. in Room 152 — How to Succeed in your summer job – CPPO staff, law students and area attorneys will speak about how to get the most of your summer experience and how to make the best impression possible. Whether you are working at a law firm, government agency, public interest organization or anywhere else, you will leave this workshop with helpful information that you can use this summer. Food will be served.

Wednesday, April 17 from 12:20 – 1:10 p.m. and 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. in Room 152  — Preview of Fall 2013 On-Campus Interviews – don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn more about Fall OCI and what to expect. We will tell you how to apply, when your resumes will be due and all the nitty gritty details you will need. Don’t miss this important workshop. Food will be served.
