The Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) seeks law student instructors for summer!
The Law and Leadership Institute, LLC (LLI) seeks law student instructors that are excellent presenters, organized, and reliable for the 2013 LLI Summer Institute. LLI introduces promising high school students from underserved urban communities in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo to the legal profession through an intensive college preparatory program on law and leadership. Students enrolled in the program gain critical academic skills in studying, test-taking and writing, in addition to self-confidence, an awareness of college-level expectations and interaction with positive role models who encourage and nurture their educational and professional goals. LLI is dedicated to helping its students achieve success as future college and law students, and leaders in their communities and professions.
Instructors will receive $4,000 for teaching 9th grade (June 24-July 26, 2013), or $3,000 for teaching 10th grade (June 24-July 19, 2013), or $2,250 for teaching 11th or 12th grade (June 24-July 19, 2013); and attending training (June 13-14). Instructors are assigned to classrooms in pairs and are supported by a public high school teacher. The student/teacher ratio likely will be 10:1 for 9th grade and 8:1 for 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Instructors must be law students in good standing and will be required to satisfy a background check. Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Instructors will be given curriculum to review well in advance of the beginning of the 2013 Summer Institute. There will be one teacher meeting during the 2013 Summer Institute and in-service days can be scheduled dependent upon teacher needs.
Instructors will also be responsible for monitoring their class at lunch and on field trips (although professional volunteers may also be available during those times).
Submit a current resume and cover letter by March 29, 2013 to Professor Joann Sahl, jsahl1@uakron.edu. Your cover letter should include any teaching experience or experience working with underprivileged youth.
Community Legal Aid now seeking law students for their 2013 Summer Program – will interview on campus on March 14
Community Legal Aid now seeking law students for their 2013 Summer Program – Akron Community Legal Aid will be on-campus to interview students for their 2013 Summer Program on Thursday, March 14th. Legal Aid is looking for dedicated, hard-working, and public-interest minded students for its Summer Program. Legal Aid has opportunities available for 2L’s (with or without intern certificate) and 1L’s. Law Students who are applying to participate in the Summer Intern Program are expected to work unpaid for at least 10 weeks and may work up to 13 weeks. Students may apply for funding through the Law School Public Interest program or the Akron Bar Foundation Fellowship program. More information on funding sources is available in the CPPO.
Applicants must list their top two project preferences in their cover letter (see 2013 Summer Program position descriptions at the link below) and describe why they are interested and what they hope to experience. Cover letters which do not indicate preferences may not receive full consideration.
Law Students will work in different areas of the law and have different experiences. Generally, Law Students may expect to interview clients, draft client letters, draft court pleadings, research relevant legal issues, attend and assist with court hearings, assist with discovery and analyze evidence, and complete various other tasks as assigned.
All Law Students will receive training in substantive areas of poverty law, meet with judges involved and may observe court hearings. There will also be brown bag lunches with current Legal Aid lawyers and community members. Past participants have included judges, a civil rights attorney, and leaders of local non-profit agencies.
