‘Food for Fines’ serves a good cause

Did you return your books a little late? Your opportunity to pay off fines and help a good cause is here. From Nov. 12-30 Bierce, Science and Technology, and the Law libraries are sponsoring their semiannual “Food for Fines” drive to support the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s “Harvest for Hunger” Campaign.

Here’s the deal: 1 food item = $1 toward your fines, and there’s no limit to the number of items that you may bring to the circulation desks at each library. This offer cannot be used to pay for items that are lost or billed to your library account. Also, we cannot accept perishable, expired, or damaged food items. Stop by for more information.

Since 2004, more than 20,000 pounds of food has been collected by UA Libraries for those in need.

Pro Bono Limited Means Opportunity!

On Saturday, November 17, 2012, The Summit Special Olympics Athletic Club (SSOAC) is sponsoring its 8th annual memorial invitational swim meet in honor of former team member, Brooke McMahan.  The meet will be held at the University of Akron ONAT located on campus.  SSOAC is a Summit County DODD and family supported swim team that competes regionally in Ohio Special Olympics swim meets.   A number of other area Special Olympics swim teams will participate at this event.  SSOAC  needs volunteers to help during this event in a variety of areas, including lunch distribution, timekeeper, runner, athlete assistant and companion, and the like. Together, we will be able to help these special athletes enjoy a fun-filled day of training and competition.  If you are interested, contact Professor Shaver at eas68@uakron.edu.

The Lexis and Westlaw Prints Are Being Relocated

If you have any Lexis or Westlaw prints more than a couple of weeks old please retrieve them immediately.

In the next week or two we will be moving the location of prints to new containers below the Law Library LCD Announcement Screen at the circulation desk.

We will throw out old prints.

Where the Lexis and Westlaw prints are currently kept we will be putting the DVD containers for our collection of movies.  You can pick out a film title you want to watch and bring its container to the circulation desk to check out.  This should make it easier to see all the law themed film titles we own.

On Nov. 9, Bruce Green, Oppenheim Professor of Antitrust and Trade Regulation Law at Fordham Law School, will speak at Akron Law as a part of the Joseph G. Miller and William C. Becker Center for Professional Responsibility’s annual Distinguished Lecturer Series. One hour of free CLE credit will be offered.

The U.S. legal profession often speaks of lawyers’ “professional independence,” but it uses the term in different ways depending on the context. Sometimes “professional independence” refers to the freedom of the organized bar, in collaboration with state judiciaries, to make rules for lawyers without interference by government agencies or other state actors. Sometimes the term refers to individual lawyers’ independence – whether from third parties who threaten to interfere with lawyers’ loyalty to their clients or from clients who demand too much loyalty. Professor Green explored whether the bar overemphasizes these aspects of “professional independence” while overlooking and undervaluing another, namely, lawyers’ independence from judges and courts.

“Professor Bruce Green is an internationally renowned scholar and leader in the professional responsibility field,” says Professor Jack Sahl, Faculty Director of the Miller-Becker Center. “Bruce’s many accomplishments underscore his tireless commitment to improving the delivery of legal services and increasing access to justice. What is not readily apparent from his many accomplishments is Bruce’s extraordinary support for others whether as a mentor to a junior colleague or just letting you know he’s thinking of you at an important moment. He is truly a lawyer statesman who will inspire others during his visit.”  Continue reading “”
