Moot Court Honor Society will be having the first MANDATORY training for the spring semester Wednesday, February 1 at 12:15 in West Hall 206. We will also be discussing the events for the upcoming semester including training dates, the internal competition, and volunteering with Law and Leadership Institute.
Scholarship Opportunity: Judge Thomas K. Jenkins Scholarship
Marion Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the Judge Thomas K. Jenkins Scholarship. The eligibility criteria are below.

Minimum Requirements. The scholarship recipient must:
1. Be a graduate of a high school located in Marion County, Ohio.
2. Be registered to attend an accredited law school, which normally maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly enrolled body of pupils or students in attendance at the place where its educational activities are regularly carried on for a course of study that will prepare them for a career.
3. Have timely prepared and filed the application and accompanying documents designated by the Marion Community Foundation for this scholarship.
4. Submit a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher and a letter of recommendation from a member of the Marion County community who is not a relative of the applicant.
Criteria for Selection among applicants who meet the minimum requirements:
1. Academic Achievement. His or her class ranking, his or her grade point average, and the relative difficulty of his or her courses will show the applicant’s prior academic achievement.
2. Academic Potential. The applicant’s academic potential will be demonstrated by his or her score on the ACT, SAT, or LSAT.
3. Financial Need. The applicant’s financial need will be considered and it will be measured by the cost of the education as compared to the applicant’s financial resources.
4. Community Service and School Citizenship. The applicant’s commitment to the Marion County community and his or her school will be demonstrated by the applicant’s service, citizenship, and involvement in extra-curricular activities.
5. Special Skills. A brief essay, a possible interview, and the applicant’s academic achievements will demonstrate the applicant’s aptitude for and commitment to excellent communications.
6. No Prejudice. In making the selection, the committee shall not consider the applicant’s race, age, religion, sex, national origin, ethnicity or disabilities.
7. No Relatives. This scholarship shall not be awarded to applicants who are close relatives of any of the following: Thomas K. Jenkins, a member of the Selection Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees of Marion Community Foundation, or an employee of the Marion Community Fotmdation. For purposes of this paragraph, a “close relative” is a spouse, child, stepchild, parent, grandchild, sibling, first cousin, niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle.
Special consideration will be given to applicants who will be attending Ohio Northern University College of Law.

Description
The University of Connecticut School of Law has established a Student Legal Writing Competition to encourage and reward original student writing on legal issues affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or substance abuse.
Topic
Entrants should submit a paper on a legal issue affecting persons struggling with homelessness, mental illness, addiction, or substance abuse.
Eligibility
Papers will be accepted from any student enrolled for the 2011-12 academic year in an ABA-accredited law school in the United States or Canada. Papers must be the law student author’s own work and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere. Notwithstanding the foregoing, a student may incorporate professorial feedback as part of a course requirement or supervised writing project. Format
Papers should be a minimum of 15 pages in length and shall not exceed 30 pages, including footnotes. They must be typed, double-spaced and with one-inch margins, on 8 ‘lz x 11 inch paper, in a 12-point font, such as Times New Roman. All citations and footnotes should conform to the current edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation and should be in a 12-point font.
Judging
Papers will be judged by a panel appointed by the University of Connecticut School of Law. Judges will evaluate papers based on the substance, clarity of the proposal or thesis, logical force, support of argument, and quality of research. Grammar, syntax, and form will also be taken into consideration.
Submission
Entries must be received by Spm on June 1, 2012. Entries must be submitted in two formats: (1) email an electronic version (in l’llicrosoft Word or PDF format) to Jennifer.Mailly@law.uconn.edu; and (2) mail, with a postmark dated by June 1, 2012, four copies of the paper to:

Papers are judged anonymously, and no identifying information should appear on either the original or the copies of the paper. Entrants must submit a separate cover letter listing the author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, name of law school, and year of graduation.
Awards
Up to three cash prizes may be awarded: $750 First Prize, $500 Second Prize, and $250 Third Prize. The contest organizers reserve the right not to award prizes if no papers meet quality standards. Winners will be notified by July 16, 2012. All decisions of the judges are final.
ILS General Meeting – TONIGHT at 6 pm in L-167
The ILS will be having their first meeting of the semester today, Monday, January 30, at 6:00 p.m. in L-167. Topics to be discussed include: (1) the trip to the International Law Conference/Job Fair in Washington D.C.; (2) other potential events for the semester; (3) Jessup for next year; and (4) general elections in the next coming months. Food will be provided.
