Enter for tickets to the Women in Law Fashion Show

The University of Akron School of Law Office of External Programs has purchased a table for ten to the Second Annual Women in Law Fashion Show, hosted by the Women in Law Section of the Akron Bar Association. The fashion show, featuring professional dress for men and women, including vintage designs, will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 6 p.m. at Portage Country Club.

The Office of External programs will be making these tickets available, free of charge, to current law students. If you would like to be entered in a drawing for a ticket to the Fashion Show, you must email your full name and phone number to Jeanne Kennedy at jeanne2@uakron.edu no later than Friday, October 28th at 12 Noon. The subject line of your e-mail should be Women in Law Fashion Show. Ten students will be selected at random and notified the week of October 31, 2011.

This event is sure to be a night of fun and fashion!

 

Career Planning Events – week of October 10, 2011

Wednesday, October 12 at 12:15 and 5:15 in Room 167 – CPPO Practice Area Series – Health Care Law. Hear from practicing lawyers what health care law is and how you can prepare yourself for a career in that field.

Thursday, October 13 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in Room 151 – Live streaming video from the White House. TheAkron Law community will gather to watch U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder honor 16 “Champions of Change” in a live presentation from the White House. AG Holder will also answer questions from law students across the country. Join your fellow law students, faculty and staff for this historic event.

 

Robert P. Merges to visit School of Law on October 11, 2011

“Justifying Intellectual Property” is the title of a new book by Prof. Robert P. Merges, of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.  Prof. Merges will discuss his new book during a luncheon address at the law school on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 12:30 in Room 152.  All students and faculty are invited to attend. 

In his book, Prof. Merges responds to those who argue that intellectual property rights are inefficient, unfair and theoretically incoherent.  Drawing on the works of Locke, Kent, and other philosophers, Prof. Merges crafts an original theory to explain why IP rights make sense as a reward for effort and as a way to encourage individuals to strive.  

Prof. Merges holds the Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Professor of Law chair at Berkeley and is the co-founder of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.

GSLA – National Coming Out Day Bake Sale – October 11 – 8 am – 6:30 pm, Student Lounge

The Gay-Straight Law Alliance will be celebrating National Coming Out Day by selling baked goods and coffee in the student lounge on Tuesday, October 11th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. In addition to selling pastries and coffee we’ll be offering literature and information on the goals of National Coming Out Day.  As a special offer, any person wearing purple will be given a 25% discount on products. Checks and credit cards will be accepted, however cash is preferred.

Spring 2012 Schedules to be released next week.

Registration begins Friday, October 14, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. for D3/E4 students and will continue on the priority registration schedule into the week of October 17th.  Due to current curriculum changes being implemented in connection with our new JD/LLM program effective the Spring 2012 semester we have been unable to get the Spring 2012 schedule to you sooner.  We have been informed that those changes are almost complete and plan to have the Spring 2012 schedule to the student body  by Tuesday of next week.  We will post an announcement with the link to the schedule once it is available.  Thank you.
