Upper Division Scholarship Information

Attention Upper Division Students:

With the fall semester upon us, I’d like to present you with an opportunity to apply for upper division scholarship assistance.

During the 2015-16 academic year, approximately $225,000 was distributed to Akron Law students in upper division scholarships. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of alumni and friends of Akron Law. Some scholarships are awarded to recognize high academic achievement, others are awarded on the basis of financial need, and others are distributed to students who have a particular area of interest or affiliation.

The application and a complete listing of scholarships may be found online at www.uakron.edu/ud-scholarship. Please take a few moments to review all of the scholarship offerings that are available before completing your application. Applicants will be considered for all scholarships, but if you feel as though you are particularly qualified for any specific scholarships, please note that in your personal statement.

Scholarship assistance may not exceed the cost of tuition and fees. Upper division scholarships will be awarded during the fall semester and applied to spring semester tuition. December graduates should not apply. Only upper division law students are eligible to receive these scholarships. However, students who started law school in spring 2016 may apply, as awards will not be distributed until spring 2017.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Best always,
Lia

Call for Fellowship Applicants for Community Legal Aid!

Applications sought for Education Fellowship in Central Northeast Ohio through Equal Justice Works
The Equal Justice Work Fellowship program provides recent law school graduates with opportunities to create projects in their communities. Community Legal Aid is inviting applications from rising third-year law students and recent graduates to collaborate on an Equal Justice Works Fellowship application. If successful, the Fellow will begin a two-year fellowship in September 2017. Community Legal Aid will consider proposals that further its medical-legal partnership collaboration with Akron Children’s Hospital by addressing the education needs of patients at Akron Children’s outpatient pediatric practices. The project, which Community Legal Aid will help the applicant to develop, will incorporate individual representation, legal research, policy research, and systemic change. In our eight-county service area, which encompasses over 100 school districts, we see education issues related to
 newly arrived refugees,
 English Language Learners,
 laws applicable to charter schools,
 trauma-informed education,
 process for evaluating children for special education services,
 schools’ ability to manage students with underlying mental health issues, and
 use of school discipline.

Pro Bono (Limited Means) Opportunities at Legal Aid

Are you interested in pursuing a career in Public Interest Law? Are the reasons you decided to go to law school mostly about wanting to help people? Consider interning with Community Legal Aid’s Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP).

Community Legal Aid is the sole provider of legal assistance to low income individuals in an eight county area. The Volunteer Legal Services Program is a program within Community Legal Aid that works very closely with private attorneys providing them with a number of volunteer opportunities. Students volunteering for the VLSP can work in several areas: Consumer Law including our Bankruptcy project and Peace of Mind Bankruptcy Bypass clinic, Simple Contract law and Simple Estate Planning.

NOTE: Students are required to volunteer a minimum of five (5) hours. Students generally either come in once a week, and volunteer longer or they choose to come in twice a week for shorter amounts of time; generally 3hrs. Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm. We are closed Saturday and Sunday. We ask that your volunteer availability be during those hours.
If interested, please contact VLSP Staff Attorney, Carla Boyle Small, at cboylesmall@communitylegalaid.org

Friday Night Social at Baxters

The social at Baxter’s will be from 5:30-8PM on Friday, August 26th. This is simply an opportunity for incoming 1L’s to meet current students, for mentees to meet their mentors, and to get to know everyone in an informal setting. All current students are welcome to attend as well. Baxter’s has food and a full-service bar. Students are encouraged to attend for a laid-back evening to wrap-up orientation week and kick off the school year.
