International Law Society – Immigration Moot Court Team Application

Are you interested in practicing Immigration Law or want court room experience?  If so, you should apply to compete in the NYU’s 2018 National Immigration Law Competition (ILC). The ILC focuses on advanced, cutting-edge immigration issues and is judged by panels of distinguished NYU alumni and legal practitioners from throughout New York. The final round is judged by federal district court and appellate court judges. The International Law Society is seeking individuals who are passionate about immigration and would like to develop their brief writing and oral advocacy skills in a mock courtroom experience. This year’s competition will be hosted at NYU February 2, 2018 – February 4, 2018. Team applications are due November 1, 2017 and Competitor Briefs are due January 15, 2018 at 11:59PM EST.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be currently enrolled in or have taken at least 2 of these courses:
    • Immigration Law
    • Asylum Law
    • Immigration and Human Rights Law Clinic
  • Must sign up to be an International Law Society member, if you are not already.
  • Must participate in an oral argument tryout, upon receipt of application.
  • Must be willing to work during the Winter Break on the Competitor Brief.

To apply, interested students must submit the following information in .pdf format via email to Norlande Dathis (nd62@zips.uakron.edu)  and cc Professor Knowles (eknowles@uakron.edu) by Friday, October 13, 2017.  Applications must include:

  • Your name;
  • @zips.uakron email address;
  • Year/Program in law school (i.e. 2L, Part-Time Student);
  • Copy of your resume;
  • Legal Brief writing sample or except thereof (10 pages or fewer); and
  • A list of all Immigration courses you have taken (or are currently taking) and any experience you have working Immigration Law

The International Law Society Team will be coached by Professors Elizabeth Knowles and Farhad Sethna. Students selected will be expected to work closely together to draft one brief arguing each side of the case. Then team members will practice and prepare to each orally argue both sides of the case.
