1.) New Opening — 
Office of Attorney Services – Commission on Professionalism
Summer 2019, One opening.

Duties: The extern would support projects related to the Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program, which pairs new lawyers with experienced mentors as a way to satisfy mandatory New Layers Training. Specifically, the Commission on Professionalism is in the process of a comprehensive update of the mentoring program curriculum, which includes extensive editing of the current program content and creation of new content to support the mentoring relationship. An extern would assist the Commission Secretary/Attorney Services Counsel in the revision process. The work would include research, drafting, proofreading, and communicating orally and in writing with Court staff and Commissioners regarding this project. Additionally, the extern would assist the work of the Office of Attorney Services and Board on the Unauthorized Practice of Law in various research and drafting projects on an as-needed basis. The position is anticipated to be for 10 hours per week.

Requirements: A law student having completed at least two years of law school with an extensive background in research and writing (preferably student journalism or law review/journal experience), expertise with Word and Adobe software, excellent attention to detail, outstanding organizational ability, and strong interpersonal communication skills is preferred.

2.) AkronLawJobs No. 9935 Overview: The majority of the extern’s time will be spent researching, writing, and analyzing legal issues. This may involve the preparation of draft opinions, bench memos and memos discussing discretionary appeals and complaints for writs, speeches, or individualized research projects. You will be assigned to a judicial attorney and will have your work reviewed by that attorney. Externs will also be able to observe oral arguments on the merits of cases when the Court is in session.

SPECIALIZED DOCKETS:
Court Services Division
Summer 2019
Monica Kagey, Manager, Specialized Dockets Program

One position is available. The Supreme Court of Ohio Specialized Dockets Section provides assistance to judges and court personnel throughout the state regarding drug court programs, mental health court programs, and other specialized dockets involving diversionary and treatment alternatives to incarceration. The section works with various interested governmental and private agencies in meeting its responsibilities, such as the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction (ODADAS) and the Drug Court Practitioners Network.

Externs assigned to this department will assist the section manager with managing the Veterans Treatment Court Strategic Planning Initiative which Ohio recently was awarded. The extern will assist with the development of a statewide strategic plan for enhancement of VTCs in Ohio, working with the statewide stakeholder group, collaborating with the Center for Court Innovation, as well as planning and providing training and technical assistance to Ohio’s 23 VTCs.

Court Services Division – Dispute Resolution Section

Catherine Geyer, Manager, Dispute Resolution Section

The Supreme Court of Ohio Dispute Resolution Section assists all courts in developing and sustaining dispute resolution services that are accessible to all citizens; provides technical assistance and training to court staff, judges, court personnel and attorneys; provides research related to dispute resolution processes, training, program monitoring and administration of policies and procedures developed in collaboration with the Supreme Court’s Commission on Dispute Resolution which includes members appointed by Chief Justice O’Connor. The Section also provides mediation for Supreme Court and Court of Claims litigants, as well as for disputes among state, county, and local public officials prior to court involvement, to encourage them to develop workable solutions for their differences. This is accomplished by convening the parties in confidential sessions, facilitating the negotiations, and monitoring settlement solutions until the parties have concluded their case.

Externs assigned to this department will assist with dispute resolution education, training, rule development, pilot project assessment, and conduct research. With the parties’ permission, the externs may observe mediations. The externs will also attend Commission meeting(s) and other projects assigned. The ideal extern would be a 2L or 3L and have an interest in dispute resolution, and a background indispute resolution education is preferred, but not required.
