Chief Justice and Justices:

The majority of the extern’s time will be spent research, writing, and analyzing legal issues. This may involve the preparation of draft opinions, bench memos and memos discussing discretionary appeals and complaints for writs, speeches, or individualized research projects. The extern will be assigned to a judicial attorney and will have their work reviewed by that attorney. Externs will also be able to observe oral arguments on the merits of cases when the Court is in session.

Judicial Services – Judicial and Education Services Division – Contact W. Milton Nuzum, Director, Judicial Services

One opening for Spring 2020

Anticipate 8 hours per week, but this is flexible.

The Office of Judicial Services provides leadership and administration for the Judicial & Education Services Division. The office coordinates the management of comprehensive division projects and provides oversight of the judges’ database, support services for the creation of new judgeships, and the assignment of visiting judges.

The extern will work with The Thomas J. Moyer Judicial Commission to review and revise, if necessary, the building use guidelines. The extern will also work on the review of the artwork loan agreements, update the artwork inventory, and develop a request for proposal to obtain a new artwork appraisal.

Externs with a bachelor’s degree and background or interest in art are preferred.

 Court Services Division – Domestic Violence Section 

One opening available. The position is anticipated to be 6-15 hours per week, but this is flexible.

The Domestic Violence Program provides technical assistance, training, and policy recommendations to improve court performance in cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. 

The Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence makes policy recommendations to the Supreme Court of Ohio through the section. Current projects include revisions to protection order forms, the publication of a power and control wheel with Ohio law, and developing a bench guide surrounding firearm issues and domestic violence for courts.

Technical assistance is provided by the section through consultation with local courts and publications. The section also staffs roundtables which allow court personnel to discuss common issues and share perspectives on current practices needs.

The extern will assist with researching and creating reports of national and local best practices for pretrial services and the Batterers Intervention programs in intimate partner cases. 

The ideal extern would be a current 2L or 3L with an interest in intimate partner violence and policy preferred.

Court Services Division – Dispute Resolution Section Contact: Catherine Geyer, Manager, Dispute Resolution Section

Three openings are available for Spring 2020. The position is anticipated to be for 8-12 hours per week but is flexible.

The Supreme Court of Ohio Dispute Resolution Section assists all courts in developing and sustaining dispute resolution services that are accessible to all citizens; provides technical assistance and training to court staff, judges, court personnel and attorneys; provides research related to dispute resolution processes, training, program monitoring and administration of policies and procedures developed in collaboration with the Supreme Court’s Commission on Dispute Resolution which includes members appointed by Chief Justice O’Connor. The Section also provides mediation for Supreme Court and Court of Claims litigants, as well as for disputes among state, county, and local public officials prior to court involvement to encourage them to develop workable solutions for their differences. This is accomplished by convening the parties in confidential sessions, facilitating the negotiations, and monitoring settlement solutions until the parties have concluded their case. 

Externs assigned to this department will assist with dispute resolution education, training, rule development, pilot project assessment, and conduct research. With the parties’ permission, the externs may observe mediations. The externs will also attend Commission meeting(s) and other projects as assigned. The ideal extern would be a 2L or 3L and have an interest in dispute resolution education is preferred, but not required.
