Description:
Summer 2020 – General Externship
The student will participate in a variety of legal activities designed to assure adequacy and propriety in, and defensibility of, NASA activities and documentation, protect legal and financial rights of the Government and parties affected by NASA activities and prevent or minimize litigation risks, claims, or controversy.
The student may assist in preparing cases for hearings before administrative bodies or courts. The student will observe various legal meetings, including negotiations with contractors, claimants, or other third parties or agencies. The student may assist in the preparation and drafting of Space Act Agreements, contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, and other legal documents, including statements of work and specifications, terms and conditions, regulatory directives, and other matters. The student may perform legal research on complex matters and draft legal opinions. The student’s experience at NASA may involve the areas of Freedom of Information Act, the Privacy Act, the Federal Tort Claims Act, the Space Act, labor relations, personnel law, federal contracts and procurement law, alternate dispute resolution, equal employment opportunity, fiscal law, security, Standards of Conduct, Federal ethics laws, environmental law, international law, export control and commercialization, intellectual property, technology transfer, and other general legal matters.

This opportunity is unpaid. NASA GRC seeks to select the best qualified applicant(s) from a diverse candidate pool. The minimum requirements to receive an interview for this opportunity are as follows:
• U.S. Citizen,
• Over the age of 18,
• Valid state-issued photo ID,
• Consent to a background check,
• A bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering field (eligible to sit for the US Patent Bar Exam),
• Strong writing and research skills, and
• Completed at least one year of law school. Completion of a patent law course is also preferred.

Description: The NASA GRC OCC Summer Patent externship focuses on the practice of patent law. Externs will get to experience the role of an in-house patent attorney first hand while working on special projects closely with a NASA Supervising Patent Attorney. Extern projects include, for example, researching IP-related issues, evaluating new invention disclosures, assessing patentability searches, participating in discussions with scientists and technology transfer members regarding commercialization and patentability, supporting efforts to draft new patent applications and responding to patent office actions before the US Patent Office, and assisting with the submission of patent filing documents such as inventor assignments and declarations.
