AkronLawJobs No. 9836 Overview: The Akron Law PLUS Program is a 4-week summer residential program for current college freshmen and sophomores with diverse backgrounds who want to explore pursuing a legal education. The Student Program Coordinator will support the Director of the program at the University of Akron School of Law.

Duties: The duties are varied and require organization, communication, and the ability to handle many administrative tasks to enhance the program’s execution. The duties will include administrative tasks throughout the spring semester to plan for and assist in the implementation of the 2019 PLUS Program.

Qualifications: 1L, 2L, 3L. The student must be able to work up to 10 hours each week, beginning immediately, and through the end of May 2018. The position may be extended into a 30-hour-per-week position during the course of the program, through the end of June 2019.

Salary:  The salary will be the standard Student Assistant rate of $8.30/hour.

Thompson Hine Summer Associate/1L Diversity Fellowship (2019)

Overview 
To further our commitment to diversity, Thompson Hine has established a 1L Diversity Fellowship in our Atlanta office and each of our Ohio offices: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable experience, and receive mentoring and training, early in their legal career. Students selected for the Diversity Fellowship will receive a paid summer associate position for the duration of our 10-week 2019 summer program, plus $5,000 at the successful completion of the summer program. Those who receive and accept offers to return for a second summer will receive an additional $5,000 in the spring of 2020 and will be eligible to apply for our 2L Diversity Scholarship.

Eligibility
To be eligible for this opportunity, students must be attending a law school that is accredited in the United States and be classified as a member of a minority racial/ethnic group set forth by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or a member of the LGBT community.  In addition, candidates must be committed to practicing in the resident office state upon graduation.

Shumaker Diversity Scholarship

The Shumaker Diversity Scholarship is one example of how we seek candidates who demonstrate personal and professional excellence, and who bring diverse life experiences to our team.

The Shumaker Diversity Scholarship provides a $7,500.00 scholarship to two (2) outstanding first or second year law students who are enrolled at an ABA accredited law school and who participate in the firm’s summer associate program, to assist in offsetting his or her law school expenses.  The scholarship is in addition to the salary paid to the student for his or her Summer Associate position.

The Shumaker Diversity Scholarship is available to students who are members of underrepresented or minority groups.  Applicants must have outstanding undergraduate and law school academic credentials, and demonstrated leadership abilities and community involvement.  Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to practice law after graduating from law school in the geographic area of one of our firm’s offices.

Eligibility for the Shumaker Diversity Scholarship requires that the recipient participate in and complete the firm’s summer associate program following his or her first or second year of law school, for a minimum of eight weeks.  Shumaker will select the office in which the student will work, but will attempt to place the student in the office location of his or her choice.  The scholarship will be paid upon the student’s completion of the firm’s summer associate program.

Students who are interested in applying for the Shumaker Diversity Scholarship must submit the following documents:

1.    A completed application form (download form here), together with a current law school transcript.
2.      A current resume, including a description of the applicant’s academic and leadership skills, community involvement, and personal  and professional accomplishments.
3.      A description of why the student believes that diversity is important and how his or her identified diverse background(s) would contribute to that philosophy.
4.      A legal writing sample.
5.      Letters of recommendation from three academic or professional references.
