BakerHostetler National Mock Trial Program Seeks Witnesses

BakerHostetler is seeking law-students to act as witnesses in its national mock trial training program for the firm’s associates. The program takes place in Cleveland at the Westin Hotel on Monday, June 11th from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Tuesday, June 12th 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and Wednesday, June 13th from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Students must be available for the entire program and will have an opportunity to meet and prepare with BakerHostetler attorneys, as well as observe some of the firm’s trial training techniques. Participants will be paid $10 per hour, and will be compensated for preparation time. Contact Dee Driscole (ddriscole@bakerlaw.com), if interested.

Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys Diversity Scholarship

OACTA’s annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program is open to incoming second and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American students enrolled at Ohio law schools.
Incoming second and third-year female law students enrolled at Ohio law schools are also eligible regardless of race or ethnicity. Other criteria for the scholarship include:

-Academic achievement in law school;
-Professional interest in civil defense practice; and
-Service to community and to the cause of diversity.

Up to two (2) scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each will be awarded to successful applicants. Applicants are required to submit an application, law school transcript and a cover letter addressing the following: academic, personal and professional accomplishments, and why they should be selected as a recipient of the scholarship. Applicants may submit up to three letters of recommendation.

The deadline for completed applications and all other requested materials has been extended to May 11, 2018.

Winners will be announced in June and recognized at the OACTA Annual Meeting in November.

Responsibilities: Assist attorneys with initial client intake. Prepare immigration applications for clients. Interact directly with clients to obtain the correct information and documentation for their applications. Perform legal research and analysis. Draft legal memos. Assist clients and walk-ins at Front Desk Reception Area. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 1L, 2L. Enrolled in an accredited law school or paralegal program. Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Must possess effective verbal, written, de-escalation, and interpersonal skills. Able to work as part of a team. The Deborah Broyles Diverse Scholars Program provides two $20,000 awards to be used to defray necessary expenditures related to her/his legal education for the second year of law school, as well as a paid summer associate position after completion of the second year of law school. The program is open to first-year law students who have demonstrated excellent academic scholarship and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
