Ohio – Rural Practice Clerkship Program – Ohio State Bar Association

AkronLawJobs No. 12056: This is an unusual time in your law school career, and we hope that you are finding ways to safely connect with your friends and take care of yourself. We would typically have visited your campus to introduce you to OSBA attorney members and our team. While we cannot meet with you in person, we are still working to create opportunities that are beneficial for your legal career. There are communities in Ohio with few attorneys. This impacts access to justice for the residents in those areas. The OSBA hosts the Rural Practice Clerkship Program (RPCP) to help address such challenges. RPCP is an introduction for law students who plan to live and work in rural communities. During the 10-week program, you will gain real-life experience in the practice of law under the mentorship of   seasoned professionals as well as   the opportunity to network with legal professionals and other community leaders. We are closely monitoring COVID-19 and following state government guidelines. We will keep you informed of any modifications to the program.
How to Apply: We invite you to apply for this program by submitting the program cover form (found on Symplicity), your resume, and a one-page statement about why you are interested in practicing in a rural community after law school. Please send your application to Kelli Bray (kbray@ohiobar.org).
Deadline: February 5, 2021 at 5:00 PM

Peer Mentorship Program — More Mentors Needed!

Peer mentorship promotes a sense of community at the School of Law and fosters student development through communication, support, and guidance to law school resources. First-year students are matched with upper-division Peer Mentors in advance of their first semester. Each Peer Mentor is an upper-level law student who volunteers to support new law students and to welcome them to the Akron Law family.

First-year law students meet their Peer Mentors during Orientation, and throughout the school year, Peer Mentors check-in with their mentees regularly by phone, text, or email, and face-to-face (as permitted) at least once per month.

The primary goals of the Peer Mentor Program are to:
• Support first-year law students as they acclimate to law school;
• Help first-year law students navigate law school and make the most of the many opportunities;
• Foster a sense of community and engagement throughout the first-year class;
• Answer questions regarding courses, degree requirements, academic support services, career services, student organizations, law review, and competition teams; and
• Provide information about professional opportunities and academic pursuits outside of the classroom.

In pairing mentees with mentors, the program coordinators review student surveys and consider:
• Background and experience
• Academic interests
• Legal Interests
• Other points of commonality (i.e. race, gender, hometown, undergrad institution, etc.)

Students can register for a Peer Mentor on Qualtrics: https://akron.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eevUEBhm1qhjU6p
