New York City, NY – Summer 2020 Ella Baker Internship – Center for Constitutional Rights

AkronLawJobs No. 10535 Overview: From taking on the NYPD’s racially discriminatory stop-and-frisk program to challenging indefinite detention and torture at Guantanamo, the Center for Constitutional Rights has been on the front lines of the fight for social justice for 50 years. We’re a multiracial, diverse staff committed to building the power of the people and communities we represent. Whether it’s immigration detention, solitary confinement, the Movement for Black Lives, Muslin profiling, or Palestinian human rights, we fight for civil and human rights through the creative use of litigation and advocacy.

Roles and Responsibilities: Interns work under the direct supervision of CCR attorneys and advocacy program managers on CCR cases and projects. Interns also participate in trainings on litigation skills, movement lawyering, and other relevant topics. Interns’ responsibilities may include: Legal research and writing for domestic and international litigation, factual investigation, client and witness interviews, policy/legislative research, and participation in client and community meetings. In addition, students are provided opportunities to attend court proceedings, community, and client meetings, and attend other law-related panels and events.

Program Dates: The internship will begin on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, and end on August 7, 2020. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week.

Qualifications: Must have completed their 2L year of law school by the summer of 2020. CCR does not accept law graduates in the Ella Baker program. Excellent legal research and communication skills. Experience and/or a demonstrated commitment to racial justice, gender justice, civil rights, international human rights, national security law, and/or social justice organizing.

Compensation: Because there are limited resources, CCR requires applicants to make diligent efforts to secure summer funding from their law schools.
