Accommodations Policy for International ESL (English as a Second Language) Students
- International students for whom English is a second language may receive up to 50% additional time on School of Law exams and may also request exam usage of a native language translation dictionary.
- Students should request additional time and or use of dictionaries for both midterms and finals through Students Services at the School of Law and by completing the International Student Exam Accommodation Request Form and submitting it to the Assistant Dean of Global Engagement Patrick Gaughan.
- All Accommodation Request Forms must be submitted at least two weeks before an examination and require approval from the Office of Student Services and the course professor. Accommodation of each type is discretionary only.
- Translation dictionaries are not provided by the Office of Student Services. The dictionary may not contain additional writing.
- The School of Law faculty strongly encourages international students for whom English is a second language to gradually take law school exams without any additional time in preparation for the bar examination.
The deadline to submit the Request Form to Assistant Dean Gaughan is WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2017.
CQE Clinic Volunteer Training – Friday, April 21, 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Our next free Certificate of Qualification for Employment (CQE) clinic is Saturday, April 22, 2017! We’re very excited to be providing opportunities for ex-offenders in Summit County to take a step toward gaining employment and independence!
We are looking for students to volunteer from 8:30am-12:45pm on Saturday, April 22, 2017. The clinic will be held at Woodland Methodist Church [444 N Hawkins Ave., Akron, OH 44313]. The time you volunteer can be applied toward your graduation requirement as pro bono limited means hours.
There will be a mandatory volunteer training on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 4:30-6:00pm for first timers. Location of the training will be announced the week of the clinic. The time you are at training will count towards your pro bono limited means hours as well. For those who have completed the training once before, you are more than welcome to attend the training for a refresher. However, you may not count the training towards your pro bono limited means hours again.
If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions, please e-mail Brittany at bfw7@zips.uakron.edu. You can also learn more about the clinic at our website: http://www.uakron.edu/law/clinical/cqe-clinic.dot.
YOU MUST RSVP IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE CLINIC!!!
Moot Court Tryouts
This year, the Moot Court Honor Society will be holding tryouts in the Spring instead of the Fall as we have done in the past. The tryouts will be held on Saturday, May 13th (after finals), beginning at 9 a.m. Those who wish to tryout are asked to prepare a seven-minute oral argument based on a short fact pattern. Students are also asked to submit a three-page section of the Law and Argument portion of their LARW II brief as a writing sample. To register for a time and to submit your writing sample, please email Sam Meadows at sam262@zips.uakron.edu.
If you are unable to attend the tryouts on May 13th, students can instead opt to participate in the Moot Court Internal Competition on April 22nd at the law school at 1 p.m. and have their argument recorded and used in lieu of attending the May 13th tryout. The Internal Competition is an intramural oral argument competition where contestants will have to write a ten-minute argument for both the petitioner and respondent and will only know which side they are arguing shortly before the rounds begin. There will also be a cash prize for the first and second place advocates. If you would like to participate in the Internal Competition and have your argument recorded, please email Jacob Nicholas at jpn24@zips.uakron.edu to register. You are still required to submit a three-page section of the Law and Argument portion of their LARW II brief as a writing sample to Sam Meadows at sam262@zips.uakron.edu.
