Summer 2018 Externship for Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor – Supreme Court of Ohio

AkronLawJobs No. 9043 Overview: Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Supreme Court of Ohio is accepting applications for judicial externs for the 2018 summer term. All students, including students of color, LGBT students, women, first-generation college graduates and “non-traditional” law students, are welcome in chambers.

Duties: Commences with a mandatory orientation program on Friday, May 18, 2018 and externship will run through Friday, July 20, 2018. Students accepted into the program may seek academic credit but are not required to do so. Judicial externs will work with Chief Justice O’Connor’s legal staff on various tasks. The primary focus of the work will be review and analysis of parties’ arguments for the discretionary review of intermediate appellate court decisions. Will prepare memoranda that summarize the relevant facts, claims, and law of particular cases, and make recommendations as to the disposition of those discretionary appeals, including a suggestion on whether the Ohio Supreme Court should accept the appeal. (The process is similar to the analysis undertaken on petitions for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.) Research projects may also be assigned to the extern. Students may also work on merit opinions.

Time Commitment: Externs must be available for at least 16 hours weekly but not more than 24 hours, and attend oral arguments held by the court over the summer session. Those dates include May 22 and 23, June 12, 13, 26 and 27, and July 17, 18, and 19. Externs will also be expected to attend bi-weekly meetings with attorneys and judges who participate in the networking and mentoring components of the externship program, as well as weekly supervision sessions.

Qualifications: 1L, 2L. Excellent research, analytical, writing, and interpersonal skills. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of the work involved, the successful applicant must also be mature, responsible, reliable, and discrete. A background check is required for this position.

To further support Benesch’s diversity initiatives, the firm has created the 1L Diversity Fellowship for
first year law students who identify as racially or ethnically diverse, LGBTQ and/or identify as having a
disability. This is a paid position within the firm’s Cleveland, OH office and is part of our Summer
Associate Program. The 1L Diversity Fellowship also includes participation in the Leadership Council on
Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholars Summit, which takes place May 22‐24, 2018 in Philadelphia, PA.

Educational and training programs are provided and go hand‐in‐hand with your direct work experience.
Some of the training programs offered are part of the firm’s year‐round program through department
meetings and specially planned events. Other programs, such as our Summer Associate Retreat are
exclusively created for you.

Our summer associates have immediate contact with clients and are involved in strategy, negotiating
and drafting sessions, as well as business development meetings. As part of Benesch’s Summer
Associate Program, you will receive a variety of work, both in terms of substantive areas of law and in
the types of projects assigned. We review each summer associate’s work on an individual basis and
attempt to include assignments which go beyond standard research projects, although such projects are
important in developing your skills and enabling us to learn more about your strengths and weaknesses.

Criteria

Candidates must be full‐time first year law students enrolled in an ABA‐accredited law school, with an
expected graduation date of spring 2020. Requirements for application include:

Spring Mock Interviews

MOCK INTERVIEWS – The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that a number of local attorneys will be available off campus at their offices to conduct mock interviews with our law students. Each mock interview will last approximately ½ hour and will generally consist of a 15-20 minute interview and a 10-15 minute feedback session. We encourage ALL law students to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enhance their interviewing skills and network with local, practicing attorneys. As with any skill, practice and feedback are crucial to perfecting! PARTICIPATION IN THE MOCK INTERVIEW PROGRAM IS STRONGLY ADVISED FOR STUDENTS PLANNING TO PARTAKE IN SPRING ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS.

Duties: Research, motion drafting, and the opportunity to observe mediations and hearings.

Qualifications: 2L, 3L.. Some legal experience is good, especially in civil or county government, but not necessary.

Work Hours: Spring Semester is flexible – ideally one day a week during the office hours of 8:00 – 4:00.

Compensation: The internship is unpaid, but students are eligible for pro bono service hours. May also be eligible for the Public Interest Law stipend or for externship credit through Akron Law during the summer.
